Re: Potty Training!!!

How long have you been trying? Sometimes it just takes a bit for things to click with some kids (whether or not they have special needs).

We potty trained Johnny basically cold turkey. Quite honestly I never expected it to happen when it did. He wasn't showing many readiness signs and would have been content in a diaper for a while (he was 2 years, 10 months). He wasn't very verbal either..

What we did was to just take him to the potty every half hour...if he happened to go, we made a big deal over how great it was...and how it felt yucky to be in wet clothes...

Reward systems didn't work much with him. He didn't care if he got candy or a toy. (however bringing him to mcdonalds for french fries helped!) But for some reason just making a big deal of when he went on the potty OR stayed dry for a long time in his underwear really did it for him. We had a few days of accidents...then when i was just about to give up, he would start to go then suddenly stop and run to the bathroom saying "potty!!".

It was two solid weeks of bringing him to the bathroom constantly, accidents etc.. till it clicked. Of course there were occasional accidents after those two weeks but it was great. He wore pull ups at night for 2 months after he was "day" trained as well...

Hope this helps. It is a very frustrating thing to do, and just remember...some kids get it right away, others do not...it will happen, but like everything else patience is a must. Good luck!!! Chat Icon

Re: Potty Training!!!

1 week with pull ups but that was not working. He was waiting for the pull up to pee.

We started underwear on Monday. Potty every 20 minutes. The 1st 3 days he held pee ALL DAY and would not go on the potty! Last 2 days...accidents after accidents. We had "1" pee on the potty in the morning 2 days ago.

Re: Potty Training!!!

Have you tried to show him any dvd's? Johnny loved his elmo potty dvd...I don't know if it helped, but he asked to watch it constantly. I can find it and send it to you if you'd like...it couldn't hurt, especially if he likes Elmo.

Hang in there. You know, the fact that he is holding it (Even though he isn't going on the potty) is a start because he is relating the whole thing to NOT going in his underwear/pull ups which is really good...

Re: Potty Training!!!

We did it a few weeks ago. Your DS is in school, isn't he? Can you wait until he is back in school and start again? Here's why I am asking....

Here is how we approached training. My DS is in a full day program his teacher thought he was showing signs of being ready and so did we. She suggested that we do the intense training over the weekend and then they would continue with it at school. The plan also included flooding him with liquids and not giving him salty or binding foods (applesauce, bananas, etc.)

At home and at school, all we had on him under his pants was underwear. He still wears a pullup at night and I was surprised how much pee those things can hold. JMO, but they might as well have a diaper on if they are wearing a pull up - I don't think they are uncomfortable enough when they wet with the pullup. When he went on the bus to and from school he had a pull up on over the underwear. The first weekend, we didn't leave the house, on the potty every 30 minutes. The only time he went on the potty at all was when our ABA teacher was over and he did it for her. We were very discouraged by the end of the weekend. Monday at school was tough too. By Tuesday, though, he got it and started going regularly on the potty. We also had a few toys that he loves put in a container that went back and forth to school with him. The only time he got to play with those toys was when he went on the potty, after we had a whole celebration about it. Chat Icon

The special ed teachers are well versed in doing this, and as I think we all see, our DCs often will do things for teachers and therapists that they won't do for us. Talk to his teacher and see if you can work together with it. I am not saying it will be as simple for everyone as it has been for us, but I do know that his school was a tremendous help and I don't think he would have had the same success if they weren't so involved with it.

That's exactly what we are doing but he holds it all day. Or refuses to pee on the potty then goes in the kitchen to hide and pees in a matter of seconds or pees on his dad in the LR chair.

That has to be frustrating! But I guess the thing is that if he can hold it all day, he probably is ready, he just has to have it "click". Hang in there. Chat Icon
