my dog keeps vomiting

STBX has Yogi at our house for now. I am living with my parents while we are going through a divorce, but yogi will come with me once I move out/we sell our house. Problem is, Yogi keeps vomiting, usually in the guest bedroom on the carpet. He does it a few times per week, and is usually yellow. STBX told me that he changed his food. But, STBX is insisting that he is vomiting b/c he licks himself a lot.

What could be causing this? Is it his food? Licking himself? Is it possible that it's spite since DS and I dont live in the house anymore?

Re: my dog keeps vomiting

Yellow as in there is no food in the vomit (it's all bile)? That sounds more like stress than new food - does he vomit at STBX's house too?

I think its the food. You should always wean a dog slowly on to a new food never drastically change it.

Re: my dog keeps vomiting

Sounds like NOT eating. My dogs will vomit bile (what Yogi is vomiting up) if they don't eat soon enough each day. That's all it is odds are. Not about spite or anything else. So his food was switched but maybe he doesn't like it and isn't eating it, causing him to vomit bile from having an empty stomach? I am sure this is it. He needs to eat, so why the switch of the dog food?

Re: my dog keeps vomiting

Agree that yellow is bile - an empty stomach. Break out his feedings into multiples through the day so his stomach isn't empty for that many hours.

We had this problem with Brinkley and went to 2 feedings per day and a snack at 9pm. Haven't had an incident since.

Same thing with my dog - but I definitely found that it was also more likely to happen when we first got our dog (a rescue) and then on days where we really break from her routine, so I think stress can play a factor as well.

We also feed twice a day, and make sure she has snacks at regular intervals (fresh veggies for many of them so that we aren't loading her up on treats).

Re: my dog keeps vomiting

We had the same issue with Daisy. We realized it was the food. Although she ate it, she metabolized it too quickly, and thus had an empty stomach. We changed her foods to an organic food and feed her twice a day and that helped.

Now, she really only pukes bile if she licks something off the floor she shouldn't have or she's stressed in the home (DH and I have an argument, the weather outside frightens her, etc), but this is rare.

Re: my dog keeps vomiting

right now we feed Yogi in the morning, and at night. STBX said that he has found the puke when he gets home from work around 4:30 (he leaves between 7-8am). I think he changed the food b/c it was cheaper (don't even get me started) but maybe I will ask him to change him to organic as a PP suggested. My concern is that if we feed him 3 times per day then he is going to put on a lot of weight. And, how do we feed him when we are at work? Maybe give him more in the morning and less at night?

You would not feed him more, you would divide his food into three parts instead of two so he's never hungry Chat Icon

Feed him right before you leave for work, as soon as you get home, and later at night.

Re: my dog keeps vomiting

I feed my pup 3x per day....not any more food just in smaller amounts. I started it cause he eats too fast and would throw up his food.....if its in smaller amounts 3x per day he never gets sick and isnt begging for food.
