Aaron (my 1 month yr old) is congested :(
I have a 2 1/2 yr old who goes to preschool, so I know in my head it is inevitable, but my heart hurts so much when they are sick. G just got over a cold and now has another one and Aaron is congested.
I feel so bad for my little guys, especially Aa because all I can do is my best to make him comfortable.
I am going to do the humidifer, the vicks baby rub and have him sleep in the infant seat tonite.
Any other suggestions?

Re: Aaron (my 1 month yr old) is congested :(
I'm sorry. My DD is 7 weeks old and we are in the same boat. DS is almost 3 and goes to daycare. The ped told me to take DS to the shower the minute he came home but she still got a cold. We just went through a cold. All I did was use the humidifier and I cleaned out her nose with saline and the bulb. I used the saline with the spray and it actually was pretty easy. I cleaned her nose EVERY TIME I changed her diaper. It also made her sneeze and I got a lot more mucous out. It doesn't make the cold go away but made her comfortable.
Also, the ped said to do this before I nursed her. She threw up a couple of times because she was so filled with mucous. It helped.
BTW, can you use baby vicks? I thought you couldn't when they were so young....just wondering.

Thank you for questioning the baby vicks, I just checked the label and it says 3 months and above. My 1st son didn't have a cold or get sick until he was 7 months and I used it on him.
H is sleeping in his infant seat, but stirrs and I can hear the congestion :(.
I know the best thing is to make him comfortable so he can sleep. I am going to do the saline and bulb too, thank you for sharing :)
I am hoping since he is nursing and getting my antibodies he will kick this cold. I had a cold 2 weeks ago and (knock on wood) I kicked it really fast.
How did you deal with sleeping? He is more comfortable upright, hence he slept on my chest and I was sitting up from 12 am to 5 am, then DH took over so I could get some sleep.

Re: Aaron (my 1 month yr old) is congested :(
No problem on the Vicks. I was so paranoid with her cold. DS has a long history of ear infections until he got tubes and I was terrified DD would get a fever/ear infection.
I thought the same thing about BF and colds but I think this winter has just been so horrible.
In regards to sleeping, I tried propping her up. It did not work - she actually threw up one. After that, we put her in her swing She did really well in the swing.
If it helps - here was my routine for bedtime. - Give her a massage with baby oil. It would just relax her. - Spray saline in her nose and try to get as much mucous out. - Giver her a warm bath. I did not wash her head for two nights but went back to washing every night afterwards. - Got her dressed and cleaned more mucous if it was necessary. I put the heater on the the bathroom so it was warm and helped loosen more mucous. - Nursed her and made sure I got good burps and put her in her swing.
Between the massage, the warm bath, mucous cleaning and nursing, she was relaxed and would sleep almost 6 hours.
I have actually kept this routine up after her cold has gotten better and the other night she slept 9 hours!!
During the day, she has been in her swing also. She has a bit of acid reflux so it helps with that problem also.
Good luck!! I know it tough and time was the only real solution.

Re: Aaron (my 1 month yr old) is congested :(
Did you try saline spray and a bulb syringe? We have the "little noses" saline spray. We use it as drops, when needed, as per the directions on the box. Then we use the bulb syringe to suck our some of the little boogies before bed. My ds hated this at first, but it really helped. Hope your little one is feeling better soon!

We did the saline drops and the bulb to suck out her nose along with the humidifier. My ped said to not use the vicks rub on her until she was older. And when we do we have to put vaseline on under it, not to burn her skin.
Also we have a vicks humidifier that you put liquid into, so it doesn't go on the skin. That puts it in the air and that works wonders.
Hope he's feeling better soon.
