Still don't get why cops have those cars in NY.

To catch up to the speeders, and because they don't look like the standard cop car.

I am talking about the crown victoria. HUGE nightmare in slush. I had one. I know how it drives in snow.

Mustangs are really horrible in snow/slush

Re: Rear Wheel car and snow

honestly, i usually stay away from drama, but i had and still have an suv - and i rolled it over drivign slow on a patch of black ice a few yrs ago, its not about what you drive, sometimes its out of your hands....suvx and car are expensive....and to many, a luxury, the families of my students would die to have a car period, so would many people...yes it frustrating but honestly i have been almost killed by many more of my fellow suv drivers trying to ride my bumper or do fancy maneuvering around other "slower" cars in the snow....whatever you drive, drive safely and carefully, bottom line...

Re: Rear Wheel car and snow

AWD, RWD, 2WD, 4WD....If you drive like a doucher it doesn't matter.

ALL cars have the potential to be dangerous in the snow. My little Scion is terrible in this snow, but I make it just fine because I drive cautiously.

I'm sick of this is better, this is stupid, how could people have that, do this...blah blah blah!

Re: Rear Wheel car and snow

Its not about have AWD. Yes, it helps but having good tires is the key.

I saw a brand new SUV trying to turn which i thought was nothing and it had a horrible time. What made it worse, the owner barely toook the snow off there car and was on there phone at the same time.

Re: Rear Wheel car and snow

Years ago I had a trans am and that car was so bad in the rain and snow that I will never buy a rear wheel drive car again unless I have another car that I can drive in bad weather.

I bought a new car last year which is front wheel drive. I really wanted the mustang, but due to weather like this I just couldn't do it.

I thought about getting an SUV, but with my long commute to work it just uses too much gas to make up for using 4WD 3 months of the year.

One day when I hit the lotto I will have a sports car and a commuting car Chat Icon

Re: Rear Wheel car and snow

AWD/4 WD/FWD may help you go better but they don't make you STOP better. Just wish I could tell the morons driving 60 in their SUV this as they zip past me "turtling" along on Sunrise highway.

It is mostly about knowing how to handle your vehicle, how to drive in this weather and not panicking. (And not being a doucher.) But there will always be skidding and sliding because some things are really unavoidable. I once slid right through a stop sign in icy weather and that was in a FWD car with snow tires. Thankfully no one was hurt, mostly because I didn't panic, just kept the car going straight and feathered the brakes. If I'd panicked I probably would have jammed the brakes and spun out.

I drove a Firebird for 8 years. RWD with a very heavy front end. A couple cinder blocks and about 200 or so lbs of kitty litter in the trunk (Dual purpose.. works great if you're stuck LOL) and I drove it every day to and from work in the Boston area. I also used to drive a RWD 81 Chevy Malibu before that.

Re: Rear Wheel car and snow

Are you friggin kidding me with this!?

for the record - You most certainly CAN drive a rear wheel DRIVE car in the snow (most cars have 4 wheels, I don't know any that just have rear wheels).

If you didn't know, there was a time when 4WD vehicles didn't exist and yet - GASP - people managed to get from point a to point b intact. My DH has a rear wheel drive car and he hasn't gotten into any accidents in the 10 years I've known him and he drove to Queens from Suffolk for 5 years.

And the cops and sheriffs have rear wheel drive vehicles because they have much more power and a faster 0-60 ratio than any 4wd vehicle because they don't have all the extra accoutremont that go along with 4wd. So when they need to catch the bad guys on the 340 days that there is no snow they have the capability to do so.
Besides the fact that they manage to get to all sorts of emergency calls on the snow days...and there are plenty...probably more from the owners of 4wd vehicles that managed to get themselves stuck or overturned or into a ditch, etc, etc.

Was I kidding? Yes. I saw the guy on the TV news this morning trying to go uphill in manhattan in his Mustang. They were filming him going all over the place. Someone behind the car trying to push it. Then I remembered all those Mustangs driving in slush. If you ever saw one... it's pretty comical of how all over the place they do in the snow. Oh... and I had a crown victoria retired cop car before. I DO know how they drive in the snow and still don't think they are good car for cops. How fast can you really do in time square? Really?

rear wheel drive = rear traction..... but thanks for trying to be a smarta$$.

I got to work just fine today with my rear wheel drive but thanks for the advice.

To me, what is worse are people who drive SUVs and think they can drive like arses because they have front wheel drive. Chat Icon

ETS - I apparently have no idea what I am talking about. I meant four wheel drive! Chat Icon

Well, since I'm supposedly being a smarta$$ - which I actually wasn't, I was dead serious in my response. I feel the need to respond to your response - Your answer to "Was I kidding?" should have been no since you actually meant your post. English is a wonderful language.
And, although you may have driven a Crown Vic, I would bet money you didn't have the driver training that a cop receives in the academy. And as far as how fast they can go in Times Square - moot point - they don't JUST drive in Times Square, they drive all over the place.

And lastly, if you know how to drive rear traction is not all that much of a detriment. Not everyone can afford a 4wd and with the price of gas expected to spike to $5/gallon maybe not everyone wants one.....for the possible 20 days out of the year that there is snow on the ROAD....

ETA:you know, it's possible that maybe the guy in the Mustang just didn't know how to drive...I watched my neighbor in his 4wd pickup get stuck in the driveway yesterday, sadly I didn't get video or I would share it (now that was smarta**)

I'm not sure why theres drama about this. RWD cars are NOT safe in any wet weather, let alone snow.

I paid an extra few thousand or so for the AWD option in my car and I was still all over the road last night...when the roads suck it doesn't really matter what car ya have, you just have to drive slow.

Exactly RWD do not handle well in snow. That's that simple. Whatever argument you want to make.

Are there morons with FWD who end up in ditches? Yes. Of course!

We have a toyota prius (rear wheel) and a bmw x5 (all wheel)

DH leaves the x5 with me b/c I'm driving DD around, and he drives the prius to work...we both have to be careful. yes the prius sucks compared to the x5 in the snow/ice, but you just drive carefully....I'm upstate and there are tons of cars here that are rwd, and people get by....

I have nothing else to add to this thread now except this pic I took today of someone parked at suny:

Re: Rear Wheel car and snow

Municipalities have contracts with certain car manufacturers -so let's call a spade a spade. It has very little to do with the best performing car, but rather which car/manufacturer will provide the better value and quote for a fleet. RWD cars make up approximately 2/3 - 3/4 of all cars made, which is why many cops have them, like many drivers on the road today. AWD & 4WD cars do not perform worse than RWD cars, as far as speed is concerned, and performance depends on MANY other factors, not just RWD vs. 4/AWD. Also, although cop cars are manufactured from the same factories as cars for the public, they are obviously altered to perform better than the average street legal car despite RWD or A/4WD. In reference to why old cars did not *need* A/4WD is that old cars weighed more, and also had the weight distributed more evenly throughout the car, as opposed to new alloy & plastic cars that do not, hence why it was not as crucial for older cars to have AWD/4WD.

Now, I honestly could care less about why people buy the car that they do, but I have had literally every style & type of car including sports cars, race cars, trucks, SUVs and economy cars. The cars that did not perform well in bad weather just didn't perform, despite why I bought the car.

And lastly, the new model trucks, SUVs & crossovers, including the new Dodge Hemis are getting mileage of 20 - 30 MPG and higher, even in their pick-ups.

I am not sure why this is so heated, but I also think that emergency vehicles should be conscious of their limitations in the various conditions they are required to perform. It is part of their training, and no secret that climbing an icy hill in a RWD car is almost guaranteed to be an exercise in futility.
