Going out to dinner when infants grow out of infant carrier

just HOW do you do it?! Chat Icon

DH and I decided to finally go out to dinner.. its been a while.
the boys are now in the convertible carseats so we have to use the highcairs..
and OMG DISASTER !!!!!!!! Chat Icon

i don't know if its just an awkward age, or my boys just had an off day or what.
they seemed comfortable in the chairs, but they were not happy even with food in front of them. it was horrible.

i don't want to give up because i want to be able to go out to eat once in a while.

do u have a double stroller? then try putting them in that and see.. its takes up room but if u can find a back table the restaurant would accommodate

new surroundings probably got them all excited. don't give up, i'm sure it will be better the next time! bring toys and attach them to the highchair.

Re: Going out to dinner when infants grow out of infant carrier

my girls at 8 mos are great in the restaurant, we bought those shopping cart covers and put them on the highchairs, we can attach two toys to them so they dont lose them
also we like to put them next to each other and looking at each other and they babble away to each other
we were in the cheesecake factory and everyone was looking at them and commenting on them they were so cute together
i'm so glad i don't bring them in the infant seat anymore, what a pain to lug those around

thats so funny you wrote that because i feel that even though they make noise, its a good noise when they are together because they occupy each other and they behave better

Re: Going out to dinner when infants grow out of infant carrier

I agree, definately bring toys to keep them occupied. DH and I try to go out on the earlier side otherwise DS gets restless and will not sit in the highchair. We also try to hold him on our laps until the food comes which also keeps him from getting too restless in the high chair. If we know we are going to be out late we bring the stroller.

we keep this in our car so DD always has her own seat in a restaurant, or someone else's home. my nephew has the same one. we never leave home without it, and she does great in restaurants.

I kept DS in his stroller. Only used a table not a booth and moved one of the chairs for DS in his stroller to stay close to me.

Re: Going out to dinner when infants grow out of infant carrier

i had them across from each other , we had a table.
i can try to put them next to each other next time and see what happens.
i have those high chair things too where i can attach toys.. we did that. but not good enough.
i am just surprised because they are really good kids. it was not like them!
but i won't give up, DH and I love to eat out but its different now that we don't have the infant seats.

We kept DS in his stroller for a couple months, it was rough for a while but seemed to get better around 14 months and on... Now we bring toys, books, cheerios, eventually one of us gives in and picks him up.

Toys coloring books, and snacks. I have just given in and expect them to really not eat that much when we go out; When we go to Johnny Rockets I get the Milk Shakes...they will sit still for 30 minutes just to eat it.

Also, we make sure we go when it isn't going to be too crazy.

Re: Going out to dinner when infants grow out of infant carrier

You have to keep at it.

Bring their favorite snacks.
Their favorite toys.

I won't lie and say that going out to dinner is relaxing, and DH and I get to have great conversation. Mostly it's trying to keep the kids busy so that they don't melt down - but this is not something we will ever stop.

Also - go to loud places. THat makes all the difference in the world.

Re: Going out to dinner when infants grow out of infant carrier

I highly recommend getting one of these high chairs...it is my most favorite and most useful peice of baby gear. Its great for when you are at other peoples homes, restaurants, etc....FANTASTIC. My DD loves it becuase they sit right up against the table since sometimes those restaurant high chairs can be awkward for the babies to sit in. My DD is 6 months and loves this chair!

Re: Going out to dinner when infants grow out of infant carrier

it took us a while with only 1 kid..LOL.
I made sure i packed puffs and yogurt b/c when his mouth was full he was happy Chat Icon
now that he's a little older he can use the paper and crayons most restaurants give, but sometimes its still a challenge.

we make sure to go to family places that are kind of loud so if he screams its not so bad. Keep trying they will get used to it.

We used this too. It was good in between using the infant seat and a high chair. I felt DD was still a little too small for a high chair. These seats are smaller and they sit closer to you.
