Re: When you're typing...

Part of my job is writing and we follow AP style, which is 2 spaces after a period.
Time to get an updated stylebook, or subscribe online!
It's one space.
From the AP Stylebook Online (paid subscription required):
periods (.) Follow these guidelines: END OF DECLARATIVE SENTENCE: The stylebook is finished. END OF A MILDLY IMPERATIVE SENTENCE: Shut the door. Use an exclamation point if greater emphasis is desired: Be careful! END OF SOME RHETORICAL QUESTIONS: A period is preferable if a statement is more a suggestion than a question: Why don't we go. END OF AN INDIRECT QUESTION: He asked what the score was. MANY ABBREVIATIONS: For guidelines, see abbreviations and acronyms. For the form of frequently used abbreviations, see the entry under the full name, abbreviation, acronym or term. INITIALS: John F. Kennedy, T.S. Eliot (No space between T. and S., to prevent them from being placed on two lines in typesetting.) Abbreviations using only the initials of a name do not take periods: JFK, LBJ. ELLIPSIS: See ellipsis. ENUMERATIONS: After numbers or letters in enumerating elements of a summary: 1. Wash the car. 2. Clean the basement. Or: A. Punctuate properly. B. Write simply. PLACEMENT WITH QUOTATION MARKS: Periods always go inside quotation marks. See quotation marks. SPACING: Use a single space after a period at the end of a sentence.

Re: When you're typing...
I'm old. They taught me 20 years ago to do 2, so I do 2.
I've known for probably 10 years that I should do 1 but I don't like it, so I still do 2. Plus, I work in a law firm and they don't like change.

Re: When you're typing...
I do 1 but used to do 2. I think it changed in general but it also depends on the field you are in. Im a psychologist and the APA style manual requires 1 space. Im sure documents for other fields would require a different format.

Re: When you're typing...
I am holding onto 2 spaces due to habit. I like the way it looks better than 1.

Re: When you're typing...
I'm old too - I use two spaces. I also put a space between initials. I learned on an old word processor though so you were able to adjust your typesetting. I still do it this way.
Thank you Katharine Gibbs..........

Re: When you're typing...
In a job seeking class I was recently taught one. They said that a lot of people do 2 due to the way they learned on a typewriter. For all my cover letters and thank you letters and resume I was told 1, but I still do 2 sometimes.

Re: When you're typing...
I switch back and forth, I always did one space, coming from a journalism program in college that was how we were taught. Then I had a job where we were required to do two spaces and it's hard to break that habit.

After a period is 2 spaces. In between words within a sentence is one space.
