School budget process

How involved do you get? Does the board actually listen to citizens, or do they just do what they want? And if you do speak up, do you think you get labeled as a trouble-maker with the administration?

I'm not thrilled with what I hear was discussed at the board's Budget Advisory Committee meeting earlier this week. I want to get involved, but DH thinks that it won't accomplish anything and that we'll get a black mark next to our names, and the kids have a long road ahead of them.

Re: School budget process

The board is going to do what its going to do. Most districts are making DRASTIC cuts as it is, teachers who have been in some districts for over 10 years are being excessed, permanent substitutes are being layed off, and services are being cut no matter what.

However, it certainly cannot hurt to go and have your voice be heard. You never know who you might get through to.

Thanks. I know that budgets are tighter, mandatory contributions to the pension plan is up over 600% over the last decade or so, Cuomo is threatening to cap budget increases at 2% on top of cutting state funding, so I know it's a tough year. They are suddenly talking about closing our elementary school, I just want to hear that they really have exhausted all other options before it comes to that.

I'm pretty sure you are in my district. Which elementary school? PM if you feel more comfortable.

The budget cap is being delayed one year, so next year will be worse.

The biggest issue for school is the loss of state funds. My small district is losing $1.6 million dollars next year - that's huge for a small district. I am petrified about how they will make this up.

I went to a community budget meeting in the fall and spoke to the board, but while they listened to me, I don't think they will do anything about what I brought up (and all the research i brought to the meeting)

I think the BAC listens to parents and residents of our district. They may not always agree with what they hear and of course they cant accommodate everyone.

I know for a fact that on more than one occasion a parents voice at school board meetings brought action. I know that's not the BAC but they are close.

Last I heard the BAC was still looking for parents to get involved so if you want to get involved go for it. My DH is the one with the big mouth shouting no to tax hikes over a certain number and suggesting consolidated services. I don't think we have a black mark.

Are you in Smithtown by any chance? I don't think they listen to the parents. They do what they want.
