Help, we don't know what to do about Tiny.

Tiny is starting to change. He is constantly biting my hands when I sit on the couch and it's not teething, I can tell the difference. Every once in a while he'll go to nip at my nose or chin. Today we went to get his nails cut and he was growling and going to bite. It was embarassing. Needless to say we didn't get them cut.

I am afraid with my nephews and niece he might bite.

Scott - I know I replied on the other thread - but I didn't see the part about your nieces and nephews. Molly LOVES kids and NEVER pulls the biting stuff with any of them ever. If he was good with kids before he should be fine now.

You may want to consider getting a trainer!

Definitely see a trainer. I think there are two points in a dog's puppyhood when they "challenge" you to establish their place in the "pack," my guess is that this is what Tiny is doing now. Some obedience training teaching him that he is not the alpha male should do the trick! You can probably get trainer recommendations from where you adopted him. (If you're willing to travel, I know a great one in Holbrook.) Best of luck!! Chat Icon

I agree with getting a trainer.
I know what helped with us with Casey.
Someone told us to get a coffee can or some type of can and to put change in it.
When the dog went to do something like this - you are to shake the can, to the point where it should scare the dog.
It worked for us. .

Good Luck

We have tried the can and a water bottle neither work.

No not yet. We have to wait for one of his testicles to drop.

Scott, try bitter apple spray. You can get it at Petsmart, Petco etc. I use it with Casey, she's 2 and still gnaws on my hands. It's been working. When she sees the bottle now, she backs off!

Unforuntanely for my dog that did not work. he actually liked it. Chat Icon

Tiny is trying to establish himself as the leader. He's testing you and how much he can get away with. Simba tries this every once in a while. Sometimes he does it to get my attention that he wants to play.

I think at such a young age pupplies really try to push the buttons of what they can and can not get away with.

Re: Help, we don't know what to do about Tiny.

If it were me, he would go on an automatic "timeout"...no playing, no chewing, nothing. When he goes to bite or chew tell him "NO" and put him somewhere away from you for a few minutes, he'll get the idea.
BTW, he's only nine pounds...why don't one of you hold his head while the other clips his nails. He has to get used to you handling him.
I agree with the poster who said he is trying to establish dominance. You have to be the alpha, not him otherwise you will have havoc in your house.

He tried biting when I was holding him and he wiggled his way up right by my ear. I was afraid he was going to get my ear. The woman wanted me to put the muzzle on him, but I couldn't. She really didn't know how to handle him so I suggested to Scott we take him to the vet.

A vet will treat his medical problems, not his behavior problems. Once he is fixed, his should be less dominant. In addition to that, invest in dog training classes. Petco has a good class for dog owners or ask for references. I think I posted the info for free dog training classes. but it is in Queens.

Be firm ,but kind with him. It will take time, but it will work.

Wait... why is he getting his nails clipped?? Are you walking him outside?? THe pavement is acts as a nail file and keeps their nails short.

If you are not walking him outside, you may want to think about doing that, It will help him to get used to people and other dogs.

I meant take him to the vet to clip his nails.

We do walk him outside on the pavement. The woman were we brought him to get his mails clipped told us it is the breed. Their nails grow quickly until a certain age.

Re: Help, we don't know what to do about Tiny.

chihuahuas nails grow very fast- I constantly have to clip the nails of my two.
both of my dogs did this challenge- I always made sure I would look them in the eye and say no until they would avert their eyes.
I would also try & get a trainer to get his aggression under c ontrol

Re: Help, we don't know what to do about Tiny.

Hi scott:

Definitely take Tiny to a trainer or even to group classes, if you can. Kim Gaylord at the PetSmart in Levittown is great.

Bruno recently becan acting, well like a bad Chihuahua, biting & growling at us, and we began *click* training with him & it seems to be helping.

Good luckChat Icon

I put our dog in doggie daycare 2x a week and its has seemed to keep her very friendly and social. It may sound ridiculous but its the best money I've spent in a long time, she's so very happy. We feel good that she gets great exercise from playing all day and love from other dogs and people.

Gus goes to daycare too, and he was one of the most aggressive puppies I have ever been around, neutoring helped (I also had to wait for one testicle to drop), daycare helps, the training class was the best....and I learned that when he got too mouthy with me to get up and walk into the bathroom, and shut the door (I live in a studio, the bathroom is the only doorChat Icon )...anyway he'd follow me, of course, and he'd be furious and bark for a minute, but I'd wait until he calmed down, and then I would come out and give him a nice pet....he's learned that he's not allowed to bite me--that if he does, it ends the game.

just a side note about the nails, don't stress, A LOT of dogs growl and bark when they go to get thier nails clipped, have the vet do it, it might require muzzling the dog, but it's better to get him used to getting them cut.
