Hives update as requested....

The new allergist - thinks it is definitely food related. We put her on a modified diet yesterday (no diary, eggs, shellfish, preservatives, dyes- basically no processed foods, no peanuts or tree nuts). Basically she has only had broiled plain steak, plain steamed carrots and broccoli, cheerios, apple juice, water, apples and bananas. NOTHING else. She had only about 4 hives all day - and didn't complain once that she was itchy.

So he is thinking it might be the food. He decided (since I was concerned about all the meds and the singular) to lower her dose of zyrtec (was making her crazy girl) and to add in benadryl as needed. We now have an EPI pen for home and one for school. And we just wait it out. Hopefully she won't have any more facial swelling, rashy face and the hives will slowly disappear. They are going to allergy test her once the hives are gone for about a month.

Yes they are - but she has had hives for about 3 weeks - so they said she needs to have no hives for about 30 days before they do the testing to make sure they get an accurate testing. Also if it is a food preservative or food dye - I don't think they can really test for that - so the only way to figure that out might be to work the food back in slowly - but the allergist said we would discuss that once we clear her up of the swelling and the rashy face and hives.

What about things of color? This sounds odd, but a family member's child is allergic to blue. The color blue. All shirts, jackets, carseat etc that had blue in it made her get a rash. I wonder how they test for that. Sounds horrible what your daughter is going through. Chat Icon

That is why we are taking out all food preservatives and flavorings etc - so no processed foods - b.c it could be a preservative or coloring. But we hadn't thought of clothing. Her hives are considerably better now that we altered her diet - but she still has a few - BUT she now has a small stomach bug (we think it is a stomach bug- vomited once yesterday - and 103 fever today) she doesn't have strep we retested for that - (waiting for the culture but the rapid was negative) - but that is different from the hives incidents.
