anyone have their DC tear duct opened up?
My ped told me they will not discuss it until DS is 1 yr bc most of babies clogged tear ducts go away by the time they are 1 yr. Poor Nicholas just can't catch a break bc his eye is always clogged. We get maybe 2 weeks of it being good & then back to his eye being stuck shut,
I just was wondering what to expect if we do have to do this..

DD is only 3 weeks but we're dealing with the same thing, her eye will be good for a few days and then its all clogged. Ive been massaging her eye which def helps but if I forget it sets us right back .

My son's unfortunately has not opened and he is 12 months. He has surgery scheduled for April 8th to correct it at LIJ. Most children's clogged tear ducts correct itself by a year but if not the only way to correct it after that is by surgery (probing).

do you know how invasive (if any) it is???
We do the warm compress & the massaging but if we forget for even 1 day, we are back to square one.
You know its clogged when their eye gets gooy & stuck shut. We have drops too..

Re: anyone have their DC tear duct opened up?
Both of Kaydyn's tearducts were clogged. Her left one opened up on it's own when she was a couple months old. Her right one never opened up and she had 4 infections in the first year. After she turned 12 months we decided to go for surgery.
We took her to St. Charles in the morning. They brought her right in to the pre-op area. We changed her into her gown and they weighed her. They gave her an oral sedative which didn't really do anything for her but make her a little silly. They tried to roll her in the crib into surgery but she kept standing up so one of the nurses carried her in. I was able to go into the OR with her until they sedated her. I gave her a kiss and went to the waiting room.
The surgery was less than 10 mins. They opened the tearduct and put a tube in to keep it open.
The worst part of the whole day was seeing her in post op. She was very upest and very out of it. We were able to give her some sugar water and once she spent about a half hour in recovery we took her back to pre op to be discharged. She was still very upset.
As soon as we got her in the car and were able to give her a bottle she was fine and it was like nothing happened. She was perfectly fine after that and her tearduct has stayed open and we've never had another problem.

It's a 5 minute procedure. The dr will put a metal wire through his eye and go down about halfway through the nose and "pop" the clog. 90% success rate. He won't be put under completely but he will need an IV and there will be something that makes him "sleepy and motionless". I am more worried about that than the procedure. But overall I'm "ok" with it. My husband and I will be a mess for sure the morning of. He never really had "goo" after 6 months but he did before that. I would say the first 6 months it was filled with goo. Now it just tears always.
I hope it unclogs on its own! Good Luck!

Re: anyone have their DC tear duct opened up?
Ugh, we've got this problem here too. DD's doc doesn't seem very concerned, but she's 8 months and it is gross most days. Like you said, we'll have a good week of it not being bad at all, then it comes back in full force.
I just feel so badly for her...besides the gunk in the eye, sometimes her poor little skin below the eye is red and irritated too
At her 9 month visit I'm going to address it again. My DH just took her to the doc yesterday to follow-up on her ear infection and he said he really doesn't even usually recommend massages/compresses for clogged ducts because, according to him, he hasn't seen any valid research that it actually helps....who knows. I have to say I'm really bad with the massaging and compresses, I rarely do them and I feel very guilty

Re: anyone have their DC tear duct opened up?
My daughter has this too -- she is 8 months and i feel so bad for her. always has such bad eye buggies, and even has difficulty opening her eyes in the morning and when waking up from naps.
On top of this, she has PINK EYE now! UGH.
Curious for those who said they are doing surgery --- what dr are you using? I hears Dr. Wang in the city is the specialist to see, but i havent made a consultation. Right now, we are under the care of a ped opt in Massapequa.
I'm hoping she grows out of this!
