Runners: how fast is your mile?
I'm a fairly new runner and an ex-smoker. I've been running since November, started w c25k, then just did my own thing taking a break during the snow/ice debacle this past winter. (I'm afraid of the treadmill, so I was doing other forms of cardio.) Tonight I decided to time myself and I did a 10.5 minute mile.(on asphalt) I'm just wondering if that's "good." I know I shouldn't compare, but I'm curious.

Re: Runners: how fast is your mile?
First of all- you can run a mile. I'm sure there are many Americans out there that can't even do that. Second, you can do it in just over 10 minutes. That's a good time in general.
Depending how serious and into training someone is, will depend what "good" is. An elite runner can run a 4:30/ 5 minute mile. My fastest mile would probably be about 7-7:30 minutes all out. Of course, I wouldn't be able to keep that pace for any longer than a mile!
I think overall, just being able to run a mile is an accomplishment (even more so as an ex-smoker). Times will vary. But a 10 minute pace is a pretty quick pace. To determine if its fast or not...is all based on what your standard is.
Great job on the time!

Thank you, miss fabulous! You're always so positive & inspiring. I actually did 2.5 miles today (woo!!) but I timed the first one and then lost track of the app bc I was concentrating.

Usually, about 10 minutes...occasionally, a little bit faster (9:30-9:45).

First of all good for you! And I agree with MissFab--what an accomplishment for someone that hasn't been running for a while. I am on the slower side---can probably belt out a mile in 9 minutes. I've been running for a while though---keep it up and you'll catch me soon enough!

Re: Runners: how fast is your mile?
I think 10.5 is pretty good for a recreational runner. For me, it depends on what distance we're talking about. I can run 1 mile in 7:30, but I can only keep that pace for 1 mile. In a marathon my pace is more like 10 mins.
So it really depends and like everyone else said just be proud that you can run a mile! Speed will come in time the more you run, if you want it to. Not everyone has to strive for more speed either...

Re: Runners: how fast is your mile?
I can also do a 7 minute mile, for 1 mile. When i run 5ks my pace is usually 8:30-9:00. When i do my longer runs of 5+ miles my pace has been between 9:45-10:00. You are doing great! Like an above poster said, not many people can run a mile straight... You are doing a great job and speed with come with time. ETA: ran a 15k today with a pace of 9:16!

Thank you- you're so sweet! I try to stay positive!
Even more positive- I didn't realize you had run 2.5 miles! If thats the case you can probably run even faster if you run only one mile. You're probably much quicker than you think

Don't compare to others. everyone is at different points in training.
What you can do is use that time as a baseline/benchmark to see how you are improving.

Re: Runners: how fast is your mile?
I run about a 11.5 minute mile. In August 2010, it use to take me 17 minutes to WALK a mile.
Although I doubt I will never be a marathon runner, I still consider myself a runner.

Re: Runners: how fast is your mile?
I'd say I average about a 10/min mile and I have been running for 3 years. In races I definitely run faster, maybe 9:30 but it depends on the distance, weather, etc!
Good job though and keep up the good work!

Re: Runners: how fast is your mile?
I think a 10.5 min/mile is pretty good for a beginner and an ex-smoker.
My fastest single mile ever was a sub-6 a few years ago. Like 5:40. But that was a straight 1 mile sprint. For a 5k, I'll average betw 7-8 min/mile, depending on what kind of shape I'm in at the time and whether I've been training.

Me too! I've never been much of a sprinter- at my prime i wouldn't be able to run at a 7:30 mi pace for more than a mile. Now- forget it. My knees wont let me really go over 10 min miles. Just do what works for you and don't worry about everyone else! You're doing great!
