calling all calorie counters!

I just downloaded the calorie tracker app by myfitnessplan.com. I weigh 156 and I want to lose 15 pounds. It says I should be eating 1200 calories to lose the weight. Doesn't that seem really low? Or am I just used to eating a lot ? Haha (I am 5'6" btw)

Also I noticed I am very deficient in potassium. What can I eat to fulfill that besides bananas??

Tia

Re: calling all calorie counters!

That does seem a little on the low side. My personal trainer recommended that I eat about 1200 calories a day (I'm 119lbs and 5'4"). Also, I'm very active. I work out about 2 hours a day 5-6 times a week. So I burn more calories. Does it take into account your activity level?
Everyone burns calories throughout the day. We burn alot of the calories we take in through our basic metabolic activities (i.e breathing). Some people (generally athletes and those with a lower body fat percentage) will burn calories resting at a faster rate (which is weight training abd building lean muscle can help you burn calories quicker while you rest).
The bottom line is- we all burn calories differently. There can be many different factors involved in coming up with a calorie count. In the end you want to burn more calories than you consume (approx 500 cal./day to lose 1lb per week).

If it seems like too much to cut out- why not try cutting out the calories gradually? For example, one week try 1400 calories a day..see how that works. If you lose some weight..that could be a good amount for you. If not cut down to 1300. It could also help if you figure out how many calories a day you are consuming PRE diet. Then you can figure out how many calories you're really cutting!

Sometimes it can be trial and error finding out what your body needs. And don't forget- dont just count calories! The nutrients that make up the calories are just as (if not more) important.

I use that app but I have adjusted the amount of calories for my daily intake. 1200 is VERY low! I would not recommend going lower than 1500 calories per day.

Re: calling all calorie counters!

Did you put a time goal in? Maybe your time goal is too low. Do you know what I mean?

Re: calling all calorie counters!

When I did my calorie calclulation, it was 1500 calories for going to the gym 5 days a week. When I change my activity level to sedentary, it also says I should consume 1200 calories. I guess you don't need that many if you are not exercising. But don't forget that even if you don't specifically go to the gym, you aren't lying around all day. You get exercise just by walking around normally and doing household chores. I would probably bump it up to 1300.

Anything under 1500 calories is very LOW and you run the risk of putting you body into starvation mode where it begins to store calories b/c you are not consuming enough food. Do not assume that you basal metabolic rate is very low. The standard basal metabolic rate calculators use the Harris-Benedict equation and they do not take into account lean body mass or frame size. If you have a high lean body mass you will require more calories because lean body mass (muscle) is more metabolically active.
I would suggest keeping a food diary for a week or two to determine what you are actually eatting. Fitday.com is a good free site to track your food intake. After you fiqure out what your intake is then determine how you can adjust it to lose weight. If you eat too little you may not lose weight.
