Catholic school parents -- how do you handle transportation?
My DCs are still young (1 and 3) but I'm exploring... 
I've heard that if you send your kid to private school, your home/public district will provide transportation. How does that work?
Someone from Oakdale was telling me he sends his kids to Chaminade and I've seen kids on the train going from Sayville/Oakdale and transferring in Babylon then Hicksville to get to Mineola....
I'm just now clicking that they might get their train fare covered?

I believe the district has to cover anything within 15 miles of the school. My brother went to school over 15 miles away, and my parents had to drive him to a pick up point that was within the 15 miles and he got the bus from there. I don't think they cover train fare.

this is correct - as long as one child attending the school is 15 miles from the school then everyone in the district gets a bus
there is a minimum distance too - i think it is 1 mile for elementary and 3 miles for high school
also you can pay another distrcit to pick a child up also if you don't have a bus - my parents did this becausee my district did not have late buses but the neighboring district did
chaminade - is just about 15 miles from huntington - so some years there is a bus and sometimes not mattering where kids live- but even if there is a bus a lot of kids take the train anyway - they prefer it

My son is going to a private school in September. I had to apply for transportation through our home district and as long as I did it before April 1st, its provided for him since we are within 15 miles from the school.

My kids are in Catholic school. They bus them from K up. Transportation is through my local public district. The catholic school sent me forms to fill out requesting bus transportation to the school and I mailed it to my public districts transportation office. It has to be filed by April 1st every year for the following year!! (so that it gets its budget approved in May). I just sent it in last week for my 2 to go to school in September.
The distance in my district is between 1.25 miles and 15 miles. It does vary by district. WE are 1.5 miles so we just make it.
ETA: the paperwork is easy - it's the documentation that kills me! They ask for a birth certificate for each child, a copy of your tax bill or mortgage statement and a utility bill!

Yes as others have said, transportation is coordinated through the home district.
However, you need to have a back up plan during the winter because DD attends a Catholic Nursery School and there were MANY times this past winter that the school was open (it's N-8) but transportation was not provided due to the weather. Since those buses travel a further distance, they are much more likely than public school buses to not run in inclement weather even though the school is open.

All of the above is true. I teach in Lynbrook & we have buses coming from as far as Bayshore & Wantagh.
