Parents of kids in Catholic school (preschool etc.) - question for you about yoga.
Question for you as I am curious what the responses will be to this. How would you feel if your young child preschool age were taught yoga in the classroom without your knowledge. Would it bother you? Thanks in advance for responding!

My DS attends Catholic preschool. I would think it was awesome if they introduced the kids to yoga! Is there something about yoga that might contradict someone's religious beliefs, or something like that?

I would think its great- a lot of fabulous relaxation techniques that are good for kids to learn- I don't see why it would upset anyone?

Re: Parents of kids in Catholic school (preschool etc.) - question for you about yoga.
I'm not 100% versed in this so I don't want to say too much about it. But, essentially the origins and spirtual aspect of yoga are contrary to the teachings of the catholic faith. Many priests and I belive the vatican (although I am not 100% sure of this) have said that catholics should not practice yoga. I guess the idea is that at such a young age the kids are very impressionable and probably don't 100% understand what they are learning and, if they are in a catholic school they shouldn't be exposed to something that is basically in contradiction with their religion.

I had no idea about any of that, that's fascinating. I can understand then, why it might be controversial in a Catholic school environment.
I suppose the appropriateness of it in a faith-based environment depends on how they introduce it to the children-- is it more of just a movement activity for the kids, or is it more about the philosophy/mindset of yoga itself.

I am Catholic and had no clue about this! My DS is also in preschool but it's public and they just informed me of yoga classes in school for a week.. is this a new thing teaching preschoolers yoga?? Should be interesting seeing 4 year olds trying this out!

i can understand those feelings but at this age, its about moving your body and being fit and healthy!
i guess i just dont look at it as something "that deep"
i think its great! great for coordination, flexibility, strength, endurance. surely beneficial for them!

I work in the Diocese of RVC and asked today about this...They said they do not mind if they are taught the moves and relaxation of Yoga but they know they are not going into the spiritual aspect of it. The kids are truly too too young to understand it besides that it is good for stretching and it is like gym. my dd godfather teaches at Kellenberg and we are sending her to ST. Raymond's in east rockaway and know they do teach yoga as part of gym but i promise you not one gym teacher is going into Spiritual sides of this

I have to agree with this though I don't necessarily see the conflict between meditation and Catholicism. Monks meditate too though I'm no yoga expert. I happen to love yoga myself so I would not be upset about this, but I'm not the strictest Catholic either.

DS goes to a Lutheran school but they have a yoga instructor come once a week. I don't see anything wrong with it.

Re: Parents of kids in Catholic school (preschool etc.) - question for you about yoga.
It wouldn't bother me. A lot of people do yoga for fitness and not the spiritual aspect. They do yoga poses on the sprout network at night. They don't even call it yoga.
