maternity/childcare leave without being tenured

How does this work?

I am currently pregnant and planning on being a SAHM after the baby is born.

Since I am not yet tenured... if I take maternity and childcare leave, how does it work if I decide after x amount of years to go back? Am I still guaranteed a job since I was on a leave, even if I'm not tenured?

ETA: I work for the DOE

I've always been under the impression that you are only guaranteed your job back if you are tenured, and even then you are only allowed to take a certain amount of time off before you have to either come back or resign. In my district, it's 2 years. I'll probably be in the same boat as you soon, since I'm not tenured yet, and DH and I will be trying to start a family soon. I'm just assuming that I'll lose my position. It would be nice if my district ended up keeping a spot for me, but I won't expect it. Different districts might do things differently though. Good luck!

Re: maternity/childcare leave without being tenured

i would look in the contract, but i would venture to guess is that NO, your job would not be protected. tenure is in place to protect your job, but being untenured, you are still a probationary teacher and a probationary teacher can be let go at anytime. you are entitled to your 12 weeks, but i would imagine that is all.

in my district (not DOE) if you are tenured you are entitled to:
12 weeks and/OR the rest of the school year off,
OR
12 weeks and/or or the rest of the year off, PLUS the following school year off, should you choose to take it.

If you are not tenured, you are only entitled to 12 weeks and if decide to take more time, your job is not necessarily held for you.

in either case, you don't gain seniority for the amount of time you're out.
