Hot Yoga in Smithtown

Hey everyone! I just joined LI Families last week. You all seem so nice and I look forward to chatting with you.

I was wondering if anyone had any information about the new Hot Yoga place that just opened in Smithtown..across from Napper Tandy's in the shopping center with Mannino's and Baja.

Or if you had any information about hot yoga or yoga in general. I am thin king of joining and was looking for feedback first.

Thanks!!

Re: Hot Yoga in Smithtown

My best friend is a yoga instructor. She has studied yoga for a long time and I really trust her opinion. She told me that hot yoga can be dangerous because the heat allows your body to do things that your body wouldn't be able to do normally and that can lead to injury.

I love yoga, but do not practice Bikram yoga. If you are interested in yoga, try a few regular yoga classes (vinyasa or hatha) and see how you feel. I have taken a few classes at Mindful Turtle in Stony Brook and they are great there!

Namaste!

I disagree with your friend, but to each their own. I think as long as you are hydrated well and don't push yourself if your body is telling you no, you will be okay.

In fact, the heat is supposed to help you to AVOID injury.

I also don't think I would go if I was pregnant, although plenty of hot yoga instructors say it's perfectly safe. To each their own though.

The only way you will really know if hot yoga is for you, is by going. A lot of studios have unlimited specials so check it out, that's enough time to know whether or not it's for you.

FWIW: I've been going to hot yoga for well over a year, every class there is usually at least 3 or more beginners, and I've NEVER seen someone get sick, pass out, have a seizure, etc. which tend to be the things people worry about will happen to them. I know there are other people on here who go who will agree with me.

I think hot yoga ays some benefits for an experienced practitioner, however it might be good to just try a more traditional yoga class or two first.

If you like hot yoga and it makes you fell good, then go for it! My perspective on the issue is that there are two camps regarding the issue with legit pros and cons. Hot yoga is just not for me....I guess I am more of a purist. :)

I loooooove hot yoga

Some tips:

Eat before you go, but eat LIGHT. Like a piece of fruit or a granola bar.

Drink water BEFORE you go, not just after. Try to urinate before starting, also.

Go at your own pace, and take breaks if needed.

If you wear make-up, you may not want to wear any - sometimes your eyeshadow/mascara can drip, or your foundation will be literally running off your face.

BE sure to drink a lot of water AFTER, also..to replenish.

Keep in mind hot yoga IS geared for beginners. (At least the traditional Bikram class with the same 26 poses each class). A lot of people, self included, never did other forms of yoga before this one (outside of DVDs at least). But I'm not going to argue.

Like I said earlier, you need to go to see if you like it (and more than one class too). Either you really love it, or really hate it, like any other form of "exercise".

My MIL went a lot and felt like it was a waste of money because she had some knee and foot injuries and could NEVER get in a lot of poses. She felt like she was just spending a lot of money to sit in a really hot room.
