Potty Training Early ... a question

DS is 13m and has consistently been peeing on the potty before bath. We started this a few months ago, and lately its pretty easy and he's done it every night.

So I wonder how to proceed? I don't want to go crazy, but he seems to have control and understanding. What do you think? He's very young, but I want to give him the option of using the potty. Bad idea? He doesn't say the word potty, but he does sign potty for it.

He pulls on his diaper when he's about to pee, and he squats when he poops. He's always had really clear signals that way. Lately he will try to pulls off his diaper if there isn't a onesie securing it. I wonder if he's telling me something Chat Icon

Re: Potty Training Early ... a question

sounds like he may be ready.

Pampers.com has info on their site.

Ask your ped, they should be able to offer you some pointers too.

Congrats Mommy :)

Re: Potty Training Early ... a question

sounds like he is ready, take his diaper off , put underwear on him, put the potty in the room where he spends most of the time (in fact buy 1 more for the bathroom) and put him on it few times a day, if he has an accident don't make a big deal , change his underwear and do the same thing....
Where I come from kids are already fully potty trained by 1.5-2YO latest 2.5 (I know sounds unbelievable, but it's true) . But they start training at a very young age. so I don't think 13 months is that young at all, especially if he is showing the signals of being "ready" .

I have been a child care professional for over 15 years. Although your child shows signs of readiness, children under the age of 2 are not physically developed enough to control their bladder activity.

It's ok to put your child on the potty if he is showing interest but be careful of setbacks later on. Just don't put too much emphasis on using the potty and don't set your expectations too high. There are bound to be frequent accidents.

Anyone who tells you their child was fully potty trained before age two is not being honest with you.

I respect your opinion, but I am a child who was potty trained by 1 year, and I know this to be true because of my parents personal situation and being unable to attain diapers for me. My sister was potty trained by 1 year via the same method. My mothers method is just to sit the baby down on the potty every 30 minutes for 5 minutes, she said eventually we just got it and that was it. I can't see myself doing it, and want to just go with the flow.

I know my child can control it, because he will pee just a little sometimes, because the potty plays music and he really wants the music. So I don't agree that all children are the same in this regard, maybe some have some control early on?

I just had to say this, but I do really respect and apprentice your response.

eta: one of my cousin's son's was potty trained by 9 months, I know because I have been their baby siter on vacations. As soon as he could walk, he'd walk to the potty, scream, take off his pants and he'd go. Her other son is nearing 3 and is not potty trained and has no interest.

not to start drama or be rude or anything, but anyone who tells you that a child under 2 or even under 1 can not be potty trained is not being honest with you ...

I also was potty trained by the age of 1.5 so were my siblings, most kids in my family (neighborhood, friend's kids ) are/were potty trained by the age 2, in some cases 1- 1.5.
Kids DO potty train early in MANY countries.
I do know that this is something most American parents find unbelievable and some even consider such early training "an abuse" bc they think a child is being forced , but that's not the case at all. You just have to know how to do it...

Re: Potty Training Early ... a question

He sounds like he may be ready. My nephew was fully potty trained at about 18 months.

I would put him on the potty in the morning as soon as he wakes up, just like you do before his bath.

Also, as soon as he starts to squat, put him on the potty. You may catch him in time, or you may not, but at least he will associate the potty with pooping.

And, if all this is going well, definitely just let him hang out diaperless all day.

I used 3 day potty training and DS was trained in 2 days.

He was older but I think the method has some good pointers you can use.

FM me if you want me to send you the PDF. It's short but has some good tips.

Good luck!
