WWYD?
We have been having a rough couple of weeks here. The first started with ds#1 having a complex seizure that needed valium to stop. we were supposed to get a MRI but there was no pediatric anestheologist available.
His MRI is scheduled on thursday however im having such anxiety over this im thinking we should cancel it..
My 6 week old was admitted to the hospital on wednesday for possible sepsis and had the million and one test work up. I was no less in brookyn visiting family when i saw he broke out in red spots all over his body and took him to my sisters pediatrician who took his temp and it was 101.4 (way too high for a 6wk old) He was rushed to the ER where they drew blood did a spinal tap, used a catherter to withdraw urin, did 2 IV's shot some type of saline up his nostrils and had every type of specialist evaluate him from hematologists, rheumatologist, infectious disease, dermatologist etc etc.. i had a team of drs working on him.
He was being treated for menengitis as a precaution - thankfully all the tests came back negative and we were discharged friday evening. He was diagnosed with either a viral infection or remaining antibodies from me (i have autoimmune issues) so we are following up with a pediatric rheumatologist next week..After
I am to say the least DRAINED. My heart is broken in a million peices seeing my kids sick.
Today i spoke to my pediatrician and asked if it was necessary to do an MRI on ds1. i know they have to IV sedate him and dont want to put him under unnecessary procedures. My pediatrician said they are pretty confident they wont find anything in the MRI results considering it was anotehr febrile seizure and we can definitely hold off on it.
I dont know if im doing ds a disservice not going thru with the MRI or if im just putting him thru unnecessary tests.
No flames pls.. i want the best for my children.. of course if my ped said it was necessary this wouldnt be an issue, but i would like to see other mothers opinions on WWYD?

First of all, Secondly, go with your gut. If the ped said it's fine to hold off for now, then do it. You can always schedule it next week, next month, or next year if needed. Take some time to settle your nerves down for a bit.... Since you have a NB, watch YOUR hormones and don't be afraid to ask for help if you think you need it. You're going through a LOT right now!

Re: WWYD?
I don't have any experience with this but if your gut is telling you that it's not necessary backed up with the ped telling you the same thing then I think you are doing the right thing for you and your family

Re: WWYD?
First
I know what your are going through. DS2 was hospitalized at 7 1/2 weeks with a fever over 103. They did the same thing...spinal tap, blood work and hospitalized him for a couple of days. I remember the stress and the fear and although it turned out to be viral, it was emotionally and mentally draining.
How old is DS1? Both my boys have been under anesthesia and it sounds more scary than it actually is. There are a few moms on here whos kids have been put under for MRIs. If you need to put the MRI off a week I think it is ok, but ultimately knowing myself, I personally would want the MRI done to rule out any other possibilities.

When it is a child that age and you are talking about putting them under for the test which is a very serious thing to consider I would want to be 100% certain it would be worth it to do the test. If it was me - I would consider getting a second opinion from someone at one of the top children's hospitals such as Columbia Presbyterian or Cornell and seeing if they say that the MRI is absolutely needed or if there is anther course of action you might pursue. I can totally understand why you would be nervous - normally I would say you can find a good ped on LI but if you have the possibility of having a tiny baby with a possible complication I would want to go to one of those two hospitals b.c people come from other states, and all over NY come for their expertise -LI is good but I can tell you when I was pregnant with my DD#1 and they were saying she "might" have this rare complication my high risk doctor who is well known on the Island had only seen 1 case in 10 years - however, since Columbia is a teaching hospital and they have a great children's hospital they see that same condition at least once a month.

Re: WWYD?
My daughter had febrile seizures as a toddler so I know how scary that can be. They always ended on there own before the ambulance could even get to the house but the minutes they lasted felt like eternity. Was you ds sick? Did he have a fever? Because they had to use valuim to end them I would probably go ahead and do the MRI. I would be scared there might be another one, and if something shows on the MRI you might be able to help prevent it if routine meds would help. I was always scared there would be a lack of oxygen to her brain with each seizure, afraid of a brain injury so doing whatever I could do to keep another one from happening is what I would do. I know putting them under is scary, but with a pediatric anesthesiologist I would be pretty comfortable. But I am a PACU nurse so that may be why I would be more comfortable.

Re: WWYD?
There are no amount of hugs I can give you AM
i can only speak from the point of view of if it was Andy. As scary as it may seem, I would do the MRI. This last seizure you went through would be enough to make me never sleep again
While odds are it will come up clean, I would feel more at ease that I explored every option to get to the root of what is going on.
But you're the mommy...you've been going through H E LL over there. Do what sits right with you. If anything postpone it for a week or two until you get a handle on little M.
If you need me to watch him, let me know.
