Rice cereal...to give or not to give?

I am so confused!

I have read repeatedly that the AAP recommendation is to delay the introduction of all solids until 6 months of age. DS is now 19 weeks and at yesterdays doctor's appointment his pediatrician said to start him on a bit of rice cereal. 2 tablespoons a day at first and to work my way up to 12 by the time he is 6 months.

I am having major anxiety about this. It feels wrong for some reason. Am I being overly paranoid?

Re: Rice cereal...to give or not to give?

I started dd on rice cereal at 4 months exactly. She wasn't into it the first 2 days but after that she started opening her mouth when I brought the spoon up. Now, almost a month later she cannot get enough. She eats it so fast. I cant wait until next week for my 5 month apt so I can get the ok for fruits/veggies.

And the funniest thing is as soon as we started cereal dd now stares at our food, drools and opens her mouth like she wants some. Its so cute.

Cereal cant really hurt them, try it for a few days and see if she is ready, if not wait a week or two and try again

if you are uneasy, don't do it. sounds like alot of rice to me. DD is 7 months, i never did rice. i started with oatmeal, now she gets 2 tablespoons of oatmeal with fruit in the am, bottles of bm throughout the day, and at night she gets barley with a veggie. next week i will try brown rice. you do what you feel is right. if it makes you anxious, it's not right for you.

We started oatmeal at 4 months. He started sleeping 10 - 12 hours every night.

I really don't think it can hurt them. Rice cereal can be binding, so we only gave it a few times before switching back to oatmeal just to make sure he wasn't allergic to it.

There is no benefit to doing solids that early... so I wouldn't do it if you dont' feel comfortable.
Our Ped said to wait until 6 months, and I was happy to oblige because of the new AAP recommendations.

This is what we did! If you aren't comfortable I'd talk to your ped about it...

My doctor told me start rice cereal at 4 months. I said, I won't be doing that. He said, Oh OK! He told me that most moms are in a rush to feed their DC so that is why he gives them guidelines. It is funny b/c he is always so excited to see me b/c he knows I am kind of doing my own thing and is always asking what I am doing, how I like it, where I did my research. I feel like he really respects my opinion, which makes me feel great!

I started with fruits and veggies at 6 months.

I never did rice cereal, sometimes I give oatmeal when I don't know what to give for breakfast.

Thanks ladies, you're right...I guess i was just giving into pressure from everyone around me. I'll start him when I feel he is ready. Glad to hear that others are on the same page.

If it feels wrong, go with that. My ped suggested that we start cereals at 4 months too. DD wasn't interested in food, seemed satisfied after feedings (EBF), and was gaining weight well. The doc and I discussed it, and opted to revisit the cereal idea at 5 months.

The guidelines are to delay solids until 4-6 months because of increased obesity rates in formula fed babies with early introduction of solids. Nothing says 6 months is better than 4.

Here are the guideline statement from the AAP website:
http://www.aap.org/advocacy/releases/feb0711studies.htm

I started my baby, with the pediatrician's blessing, on rice at 4 months.

Same here. It is all practice for your LO, with their nutrition coming from their BM or formula. So, do what you are comfortable with.

We just started oatmeal at 4 months. We aren't doing rice bc she is already on Enfamil AR that has rice starch in it and it would be too binding. Next we are supposed to try barley and then fruits. He said start veggies btwn 5-6 months.

He also said though if we come to the 6 month check up and havent tried a drop of solid foods, that would be fine too. DD has bad reflux so we are trying solids to try to reduce spit up.
