My friends & family know our dogs and cats are a huge part of our life, and they are very respectful of that. I have one friend who is allergic and for that reason, we hang at her house (and she is thankful!). I have one friend who is leary of big dogs and I will make sure they stay in their beds when she comes over until they calm down.
Anyone who would stay with me (not that I have room!) would have to understand, or I will arrange lodging with my family or a hotel.

I am allergic to cats so when I go to stay with my best friend, who has two of them, I load up on the Claritin in advance and just wash my hands often and try to avoid them.
If I am staying over, she is usually kind enough to vacuum the guest room and change all the bedding before I get there, then lock the cats out of it, so I have a place with less cat hair to sleep.
People who visit my house know I have a dog and I have yet to encounter someone who was afraid of or allergic to her actually. I guess I am lucky that my family and friends are dog lovers! If someone really had a problem I would keep her away from them, but I am also lucky that I have a pretty well-behaved dog who also has no interest in people who have no interest in her!
