What number to call for police when it's not an emergency?
People across the street from me are burning something in their backyard and the smoke is blowing right into my house! I can't tell what it is but it smells HORRIBLE! They do this every so often and I can't stand it.
What number do I call to get an officer over there? Will he be able to tell them to stop or are they allowed to do it since it's their property even though the smoke is blowing all over?

or call 911 and tell them its not an emergency

never call 911 unless it's an EMERGENCY!
call 411 or your local precinct. you can find local numbers by going to the town website or googling "town x police station"

See in our town we called the local precinct & they told us to call 911. We had a door to door guy try to get into our house when we didn't open the door when he rang the bell and he opened our screen door & was rattling our front door & turning the doorknob.

that's because someone trying to break into your house is an emergency
someone burning something in their backyard is not unless that something was their garage or back of their house on fire

In my town, burning anything is illegal. Try calling the precinct. Sometimes they don't dispatch those calls for hours though. When in doubt, call 911.. Even if it isn't a huge emergency, call them. That is what I have been told by the local cops. They could be burning toxic stuff and you will never know it!!!

This is from the Nassau County Police Dept website:
1. If you have a non-emergency complaint. Call you local precinct only if there is no need for police to respond. Otherwise, call 911

311 for general complains. Those go directly to the local precinct and they address them when there are no emergencies in the area.

Re: What number to call for police when it's not an emergency?
Back in February I had to make a police report for something that was not exactly an emergency. I had a criminal impersonation issue. I called the precinct and they told me to call 911. A cop came to my office about 20 minutes later to take the report. I would have preferred not to call 911 because there were no physical injuries and no one was fleeing, etc.

Re: What number to call for police when it's not an emergency?
our local precint tells you to call 911 and tell them it's a non-emergency. Apparently that's the channel they have to go through.
You can also call your fire department. We've had fire marshalls show up at our house because neighbors called when we had a bonfire in the back yard. Basically what they do is come and make sure you are burning what's legal and in the right sized container with the proper precautions around. Ours was fine but i know of some people who got fined for burning things in in appropriate containers.

Not true at all. We have kids in the park in our block drinking at night. We call the station and they tell us to hang up and call 911. They can track it. Also, they have enhanced 911 in NY so that if there is a recurent problem in an area they can check the 911 system.

Re: What number to call for police when it's not an emergency?
I live in the 2nd precinct (Suffolk Co), and they tell us to call 911. When we do, we say it's a non-emergency. I think it might vary by county. The city might have its own system (someone mentioned 311).

Re: What number to call for police when it's not an emergency?
It varies by county. Before Suffolk had the 852-cops number for non emergencies, I once called the precient and they said I had to call 911- even if it was NOT an emergency- becasue that was the only way to dispatch the cars.
Now I call 852- cops
In Nassau they might still be dispatched through 911 for even non emergencies. Ask at the precient.

This is 100% true. The cars get dispatched through 911. Not through the precient.
