CDL license

DMV website is so confusing to me and my husband does not seem sure what he has to do.

Husband has CDL C which means he can drive a small school bus. He wants to train for the big school bus which is a different CDL license. Can he train on the big bus under the CDL C or does he need to renew his CDL permit which expires this week. Is the CDL permit similar rules to other regular driving learners permits - does he have two years to renew it - does he use the same form to renew it "application for driver license or non driver id card" form - options on this form say "learner permit, id card, renewal, replacement, change or exchange from another state" So we'd check renewal I suppose? Does he need another medical to renew?

I think my husband's job would be helpful with this but he is not coming home with straight answers.

Funny you should ask this. My father needs to renew his CDL and from what I read it is very confusing......

My dad has a CDL with no restrictions and he got his before sept 99. So I think he is going to need to take a medical to renew.

Renewing also has something to do with a K restriction.

There should have been a card that came in the envelope that kinda explained everything....not very well ofcourse...but if you break it down line by line slowly it does make a little bit of sense.

Best bet would be to go down to DMV and see what they say....

I'll ask my DH when I get home; I'm sure he'll know the answer.

DH said you would need a valid medical card. He said you'd have to renew your permit to train.
