UFT EMAIL

ear Colleagues,
There will be no layoffs.
An agreement reached this evening between the UFT, the City Council and Mayor Bloomberg will ensure that no teacher will be laid off in the next year.
This is a victory for the children and the school communities of New York City, and it was only made possible due to the tireless efforts of UFT members and our parent and community allies. Thank you for everything you have done.
I also want to thank Speaker Christine Quinn and the City Council, whose leadership and commitment to our schools were instrumental in putting this agreement together.
From the beginning, we steadfastly fought to prevent all layoffs, knowing full well the harm that they would do to our students as well as our members and their families. Through marches, rallies and other actions, big and small, you and your colleagues made the case that layoffs were wrong, unnecessary and a disaster for our schools. We prevailed in this fight because we got the public and the City Council on our side.
The agreement with the UFT includes financial savings to the city generated by the redeployment of teachers in the ATR pool and a one-year suspension of study sabbaticals that will take effect in the 2012-13 school year, along with additional resources from the City Council and the DOE. The 1,200 teachers in the ATR pool will now have a real opportunity to fill full vacancies and long-term leaves in their school districts and will have a clear pathway to a permanent placement.
Of course, the fight on behalf of the city’s schoolchildren in this city does not end with today’s agreement. There is more work to be done to protect our schools and other city services from future cuts. That work begins with securing the renewal of the millionaire’s tax in Albany before it expires in December. With the wealthiest New Yorkers paying their fair share, we can inject $5 billion of much-needed revenue into the state’s budget next year alone. We will work hard over the next six months to make that happen.
We have this agreement today because UFT members – you – never stopped fighting for our children, our schools and our communities. I have never been prouder of my union colleagues than I am today. This is your victory.
Sincerely,

Michael Mulgrew
