Anyone else Unemployed?
There is NOTHING out there and the ones you do get an interview for, there are so many others going for the job that you don't even have a chance even if you are very qualified.

Yup. Been out of work since August 2009. I'm a social studies teacher. I'm not picky... I've applied to day cares, yearbook companies, educational supply companies, TA positions... anything vaguely eduacational, I've applied for it. I've probably put in HUNDREDS of applications. I've had one interview. In 2 years. It is terrible, my unemployment runs out this week, and I HAVE to find something by September.

Yup, unemployed lawyer here. I made the stupid mistake of moving to a jurisdiction where I am not admitted, then taking time off because I was pregnant and gave birth. I have been unemployed since May of 09 with the exception of a 8 week stint as a law clerk and some per diem work.
Barely got any interviews until lately, then I get to the point of almost getting the position and someone edges me out. Very discouraging.

Yeah, it is very discouraging.
My dh was told today when he went around to places that you have to apply online everywhere. These companies don't even bother to read the emails or they get too many and just pick the 1st few.

Ugh, I was told pretty much the same thing too. I am planning on going around to places. It is so frustrating and honestly demoralizing. I wish the best to your DH. I hope he gets something too!

Thanks. Yeah, there was nothing out there and it used to be, you go to a place, see if they need help and you get hired on the spot. Now they want you to jump through hoops JUST to get an interview that they don't even call you back about when you don't get the job. So sad. He did get a lead about a job from a friend. It is a little less than he would like but it is full time so he would take it if offered. Hopefully he will get a call. At least at this one his friend works there so he can keep checking it out with him.

What type of work is your dh looking for? I would think the usual process would be emailing a resume. If he doesn't already have a resume I would suggest putting one together and just sending them everywhere. A good cover letter helps too. Is he on sites like career builder and monster? I found my job this way. Every morning I was able to be one of the first to send in my resume. I would jump on the job as soon as it was posted. I think calling someone to tell them they didn't get the job isnt done much anymore. I know its frustrating but I find a positive attitude makes all the difference. I wasn't having to much luck for months but it all turned around and I landed a great job. For me what helped was I changed my negative outlook to a positive one. I think with a more positive Outlook I interviewed better. I actually got 2 offers after months of rejection. It's hard out there but I'm sure he will find something great!

Yes, he has a resume and sends it out with a cover letter each and every time. I actually had someone rewrite it for me and he had gotten his temp. seasonal job right after that. Right now he will take anything but his background is warehouse. Everyday we are on craigslist, indeed, monster, snagajob, newspapers, anything else online. The resumes are literally send the minute the job comes up and still nothing. He has had 2 job interviews in person, nothing. He has had 3 job "interviews" on the phone, nothing.

Re: Anyone else Unemployed?
Could his interview skills be the issue. That's what my problem was. I was getting interviews as well but wasn't landing the job. I finally did a mock interview with a friend and was able to work thru my issues and practice answering common question. It helped so much I got the next 2 jobs I interviews for. I also went into these interviews feeling confident and I think that helped as well.

I don't think that is it. He is almost 42 years old so this is nothing new. One interview is was actually told that the guy wanted to start him the next day but the head boss had to make the decision. Never got a call back. He is always confident going in and out. I truly think it is the amount of people applying. One job said they got 30 people in 1 day and stopped the ad so they could cut it down to 7 people, then 3, then 1.

Re: Anyone else Unemployed?
Just because he is 42 years old and has had jobs before doesn't mean that his interview skills are great.
Maybe when he got his prior job, the market wasn't so difficult, or prior experience was higher on the list than interview skills. Now, when he's in a line of 30 other people, he's not number 1 on the list. If he was on a line with 3 other people, then maybe he would be the top.
IMO it can't hurt to have his resume reviewed and interview training. Obviously what is going on now isn't working. Let the experts tell you that he's doing everything right, instead of saying he's not getting a job because there is so many people. Personally I would make sure that I am doing everything the way I should be to the best of my ability to give myself a fighting chance.

Re: Anyone else Unemployed?
I am. My problem is that this is my FIRST real job out of school. I went to grad school straight out of college and now I have my PhD but no work experience. What makes it worse is that I left research and science to pursue a career in academic publishing, a field that is difficult to break into even if you have some publishing experience. It totally sux. I am shortlisted for a great job, but I haven't heard back yet. I'm still applying for other jobs because I'm not going to assume that this job will work out. It's hard, I graduated in May 2010, and I feel like I've done nothing of value since getting my degree.

Thanks for the advice. The jobs he HAS gotten the last few times are from temp agencies. Won't do that again as none of them can put you on full time anymore. You can easily get a $7, $8/hour job too. It is the higher pay ones that are harder to get as more people are going for them.

Ugghh....I am so sorry. And yes, I see this a lot lately that they don't want to train anymore.

Re: Anyone else Unemployed?
I am since Feb of this yr. Laid off after 14yrs. Slim pickings out there & all I see now is retail jobs (not that thats bad) but I need to make more then $10 an hr to give up my UB. I have 2 children and need to pay daycare. The positions I did apply for herd nothing back. Not even a "no". Its tough.
