chewing.

my pup chewed my couch.. BOTH OF THEM.

i dont know what to do. Chat Icon

how do i get him to stop this??

im home all day with him, i let him run in the yard several times a day and he goes for walks. so i know he is releasing his energy..

im so upset. im afraid im going to get the couch fixed and hes just going to do it again..

anyone have any experience with this and how did you work towards a solution?

oo and can someone recommend a couch repair company? Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: chewing.

are your pups teething?

spray bitter apple on the couch, it tastes gross and should stop them from chewing on it.

Re: chewing.

i found stuffing food into a marrow bone worked for my dog. He would work on it for hours. I would alternate between peanut butter and natural balance rolls and dog food.

Re: chewing.

I used peanut butter in a kong and made sure they had lots of structured play during the day.

Re: chewing.

Like the PP mentioned, exercise with structure is what you're going to get the most out of. Unfortunately, unless you're actively playing fetch in the backyard, it's not going to have the effect of a good, long walk. I'd up the walks to 2 or 3 times a day for at least half an hour each time, see what kind of effect it has.

For chewing, we tried lots of things but the one that seemed to be their favorite is deer or elk antlers. They're solid and don't have any kind of unnatural preservatives on them, and the dogs love them. How big is your dog? They sell them online but I'm also hearing they're becoming popular in mainstream stores.

When the dog is chewing something inappropriate, it's important to catch them in the act, make sure they know you're not happy immediately, and then give them an alternative to chew. Praise them when their focus shifts to the "good" chewing choice. You've got about 3 to 5 seconds to make an impact on their learning and memory, not much time at all. But if you do it and you're consistent, then they learn the couch is bad, the bone is good, and being praised is better than being yelled at. Chat Icon
