sterlizing bottles, im Clueless
Im ebfing my 5 1/2 week old but want to introduce a bottle a day starting now. Do you even have to sterilize anymore??
Ill be pumping milk, and using that milk to make the bottle...
I have a sterilizer, but if I sterilize a few bottles do they stay sterile or do I have to make them immediately...I cant see doing this since Im starting to pump today so I doubt ill get more than 1 bottles worth...
Do you sterilize and how long is stuff sterile for...
It seems silly sine I dont sterilize my boob...and she sucks her fist and thats not sterile either...

Did you check to see if your dishwasher has that option?

Re: sterlizing bottles, im Clueless
As soon as you expose any bottle to normal air, it's no longer sterile, so just cleaning them normally (in either hot sink water, or a dishwasher) will kill existing things on the bottles, and will be just as clean as "sterilized" bottles that are left on the shelf.

Re: sterlizing bottles, im Clueless
Wow I am so happy to read this post because I sterilize every bottle after EVERY use it is really such a pain but I heard that you are supposed to do it for the first 6 months. DD is 8 weeks old, so I still had 4 more months of thise but after reading what you all wrote, I think I will just use either the dishwasher or wash them with hot water.
Thank you

Re: sterlizing bottles, im Clueless
We do run them in the sani wash on the dishwasher every once in awhile. We sterilized them the first time - just 5 mins in boiling water.

Re: sterlizing bottles, im Clueless
in the baby class we took they told us they just needed to be sterilized the first time in boiling water for 5 minutes - after that just hot soapy water is fine. no need to sterilize every time.
we were also told even thought they are dishwasher safe....DONT dishwash them it breaks down the plastic and you'll end up having to buy new bottles - they said you'll notice them having a scratched appearance inside the bottle - that's not good.
this is going to be our first baby - so I'm just taking in all the advice

Re: sterlizing bottles, im Clueless
We also only sterilized the first time (and also if they had a cold, etc). Otherwise, in the dishwasher after each use!
