FTWM - going back to work and BFing

When/how do I start weaning DD from BFing for going back to work? Do I have to? I pump now and she gets a bottle once in a while, but obviously she will be getting a lot more when i go back to work. I still want to BF in the morning and at night once I am working. Any advice? Thanks!

I went back to work when DD was 11 weeks old and I didn't really wean her from BFing. I just made sure when the time got closer that she did take bottles no problem and that was it. When I went back she took the bottles fine, I pumped 3x/day at work to provide BM for the next day and I BFed in the morning, after work and before bed.

Ditto - I went back to work when DD was only 3 weeks old. I strictly pump now bc I work 8-10 hr days. She rarely goes on the breast. I pump every 3-4 hours. Just give her a bottle and make sure that she takes to it.

Thanks guys. I give her bottles once in a while and she takes them, I just want to be sure she will also still take my breast. Guess I will slowly start giving her more bottles.

Same here....don't worry, it's a complete work in progress! You will fall into a groove within a few days. Just make sure your DC will take a bottle, that's really all you need to do.

Re: FTWM - going back to work and BFing

I went back to work when DS was 11 weeks and didn't wean him either. My milk supply diminished significantly because I wasn't able to pump every few hours (I'm a social worker and out in the field a lot so I'm not always in the office for pumping purposes). I BFed every morning and at night when I came home. I didn't have enough of a supply to continue giving him BM so we supplemented with formula. DS actually started to reject BFing because he knew he would get way more milk with the bottle of formula. By the time he was 5 months, BF was no more.

This is what I am afraid of! I want her to still want to BF, but the milk flows so easily from the bottle.

Re: FTWM - going back to work and BFing

I went back to work 5 months after having DS - it is now 14 months and we are still BFing! I brought my pump to work each day and pumped in the middle of the day at lunch. Try to pump at the same time each day so your body is used to it. I would nurse in the morning, pump at work, nurse when I came home, and again before bed. It worked beautifully and I had plenty of milk to leave for the babysitter during the day. I even had extra to freeze which was great. Once I made it closer to a year I was getting less each time I pumped so I dipped into the freezer stash. You need to be determined to keep up with the routine, but it is SO worth it!
