Elliptical or Treadmill
I just started working out and have been dong 20 mins on the elliptical. Yesterday all of the ellipticals were full so I walked/ran for 20 mins on the treadmill. I felt that I had a better workout on the elliptical, but have read that the treadmill is actually better.
Anyone have any insight? Thanks

I'm no expert but i think it depends on what your goals are. are you trying to lose weight? i think as long as you are getting your heart rate up you will burn the calories. if your goal is to run a 10k, then the elliptical is prob not going to help you

Re: Elliptical or Treadmill
I was an Elliptical person for a long time and then I went to a treadmill and for me the treadmill is a way better workout but everyone could be different. I just noticed I was able to tone up and lose weight faster on the treadmill.

Re: Elliptical or Treadmill
the treadmill is a better work out for me. I tend to use the elliptical on days when I don't feel like running or working out really hard because the elliptical seems to be easier for me. But, it really depends on resistance, time and how much you work out. A friend of mine does the elliptical 3 days a week and loves it but she doesn't have a hard time keeping weight off so it works for her. I see better results from the treadmill and running but I struggle with weight gain very easily. One day a week though, I will use the elliptical for 45 minutes to switch my routine up and when I am done, I am drenched as if I ran. So for me, if I use the elliptical, I have to do so for longer to feel like I got great workout. But everyone is different!

I also struggle with weight gain. I noticed that on the Elliptical at at lvl 5 resistance and a moderate pace I work up a real good sweat and my heartrate is steady. On the treadmill, I don't sweat as much and I need to actually run before getting my hear rate up.

Re: Elliptical or Treadmill
I get a much better workout on the treadmill than the elliptical. When i use the elliptical, I make sure myr esistance and incline are way up there otherwise it just doesnt do it for me!

Re: Elliptical or Treadmill
I think that nothing beats the workout you get from running (treadmill). I have been a runner more or less all of my life - so I am biased. I used an elliptical for about 4 months in college and actually gained weight by skipping my runs. JMO, but running will transform your body in ways the elliptical never could.

Thats really good then! The elliptical might work better for you, as with my friend. As long as you are breaking a sweat and really pushing yourself, its going to be a great workout! With me, running is one of the only things that has helped keep the weight off. Also, my trainer recently mentioned to make sure when I am running on the treadmill to put the incline at at least 1 because at 0 incline, is kind of like a slight downhill run. If you decide to try out the treadmill again, maybe try that and it might feel like more or a challenge for you.

Thanks. I am going to try the incline and running.

Re: Elliptical or Treadmill
I prefer Elliptical. I get a really good work out by doing intervals on 10-11 resistance or a steady pace at a 9 for a full 30 mins. I was never a runner and always say I want to try the treadmill but always go to the elliptical.

Re: Elliptical or Treadmill
I prefer running outside over a treadmill by far, but will use a treadmill if it is raining or 90+ degrees and crazy humid.
But I like to work out on the elliptical once in a while to change it up after getting a stress fracture last year from running. Definitely do not get the same intensity of workout though.
