Is running 1 mile on treadmill the same as running 1 mile on the elliptical?

Is running 1 mile on treadmill the same as running 1 mile on the elliptical?
I usually use the elliptical and average about a 7 minute mile. My friend, who is an avid runner, runs on the treadmill and averages about an 8 minute mile. It got me thinking...do I actually run faster than her or is a mile on the elliptical different than a mile on the treadmill??
Any thoughts?

Its different. The elliptical uses less exertion so you can run faster & longer than you'd be able to do on a treadmill. Its because a good amount of the work of running is pushing off the ground to drive your body forward, which you don't have to do with an elliptical.
(I actually did a presentation in college why elliptical machines were better for joints in the long run so I studied up on this)
