CPSE preschool
Hello everybody
Does anyone know about CPSE preschool in Nassau county. Has anyone know ICCD in New Hyde Park and Brookville center at SUNY Old Westbury? Or any link we can check with.....
Thanks so much

Re: CPSE preschool
We must be on the same tour circuit. I saw all 3 schools this week.
ICCD I would save for last. Honestly, it didn't seem different from the general daycare/preK DS attends now. The head teacher does not have a Masters in Special Ed, they have degrees in Early Childhood Development and addtl. Training, though what training was quite vague. There is also no OT on site, no SLP (you need to bring in your own or go elsewhere). No indoor play area, not good for the winter months. All in all, I decided no pretty quickly. DS has more at the daycare he attends now, and if the staff are not much more prepared, I don't see the point. Also, this was the only school where DS did not explore at all. His head was burrowed in me the whole time. Oh, and the class they offered was too big, 18-1-2.
Old Westbury is in a beautiful setting. They had picture schedules up everywhere, and it was cheerful and inviting. They provide services on site, and the classes are 15-1-2 and 12-1-2. The teacher we met with was great with DS. Overall, I loved it, but it is furthest from our home. One possible minus is that the non special Ed students generally do not attend every day, so the class could wind up as more if a special education class some days, which isn't a fully integrated setting, but maybe I'm reading too much into it. The head teacher in each class has a Masters in Special Education.
The Leeds Center is similar to Old Westbury, though not as aesthetically pleasing, though it wasn't dreary either. I liked this program also, and the specifications above apply, though all classes are 15-1-2. There is a nurse on site also.
Fm if you would like. We are going to look at Marcus Ave. next week and then we need to decide based upon what we are offered. Good luck!

Re: CPSE preschool
Thank you so much cjik.....you really doing good research for your DS. Actually I live near Old Westbury and I am thinking about SUNY but their schedule is Am9-pm2:45. They do have nap time but ICCD doesn't. ICCD told me they have 2 ST and maybe only part time. And Old Westbury only 1.5 ST (full time and part time). ICCD provides lunch and Old Westbury need to pack lunch even snack/drinks. How you find out their teacher is not SE teacher? cause they told me differently. Did you meet with Mary Roth? We have checked Marcus and Leeds as well. By the way, do you know any school for kids younger than 3 y/o?? Good luck with your other tours and SD meetings!!
I don't know Mil neck since they told me all spots are filled for all locations....sorry!!

Re: CPSE preschool
My daughter got accepted at the following schools:
MARCUS Avenue: I was not impressed with the school but they was willing to placed my daughter intergrated class setting with a lot of typical developing 3 years. My daughter's development dr is also in that building and had nothing but great things to say alot there program. Eventhough i heard mix reviews about there school I am probably going towards there school.
OLDWESTBURY: They did not accepted my daughter in there intergrated class setting felt that they she should be in a self contained class.
LEEDS CENTER: They accepted my daughter in there intergrated class setting I felt this school would be too far for my daughter. I also felt that when I was given the tour it was rush.
Brookville Children Center: located in Brookville campus the school was beautiful. I was in loved with their school and they were willing to accepted my daughter in there self contained class setting not there intergrated class setting. They have alot of great technology like there smart boards a sensory gym as well as music threapy. The downside of this school these children are severly disabled and my daughter would not have an opportunity to be around children who were typical developing. The children rage from age 3-21.
If you havie any questions about my experience with these schools you can fm.

I really liked Old Westbury (though I do not know if we have a spot yet). Definitely look if it is close for you. You are right, this school and Leeds do not provide lunch. ICCD does. Leeds we have a spot, and it is very close to home and work for us, so most likely DS will go there.
I do not know about STs on staff at ICCD. I was told I would need to have my own come in, and I repeated this, because I thought the integrated schools generally offered services through their own SLPs. They could not do OT for DS at all either, no sensory gym, so he would not even be there two mornings a week. As for the degree, ask specifically what education the head teacher has. I was told they were trained in social education, but when I pressed, Mary did say they have Early Childhood degrees with training in special education, which is different than a Masters in Special Education (this is backed up on the ICCD website). Not to say that the teachers cannot handle the kids, we observed two transitions and the teachers handled them beautifully, and they seemed warm, the children seemed happy. The very big minus for us was a lack of OT on site, and no indoor play space. If DS is not active, he really can have trouble in a group.
I hope this is helpful, and FM if you have questions.
