Re: Do you consider the hood of a jacket/coat a hat?
It covers the head even more than a hat does (also covers ears and neck), it keeps the heat in in the winter, rain off when it's wet, and sun off in the summer. To me, that's pretty much the definition of a functional hat.
It may not be acceptable at a Royal Wedding, however....

i think it's a perfectly fine standby so long as your DC will keep it on. DS doesnt like hats, but will keep his hoodie on.

no i do not. a hat needs to be close to the head to prevent loss of heat. air/wind/cold can get between a hood and the childs head which = heat loss. not effective!

Well considering DD won't wear a hat and won't wear a hood either- I'd say they are one and the same.
Luckily she has survived so far!

this
moot point though since DS won't keep anything on his head!

Re: Do you consider the hood of a jacket/coat a hat?
well, i guess if that's the exact question, no. But, i think there are times when a hood is sufficient. If I'm not out for a walk or outside playing in the snow, and just going from the house to the car, and from the car into a store or to school or something, I think a hood is fine. Especially since my kids rip off hats pretty quickly. If I'm outside for a long period, I try my best to keep a hat on them. a hat with ear flaps. And I try to use a hood over the hat.

I think Kenny's hood counts as a hat, then...
It all depends on what the "hat" is being used for. If it's purely to keep cold air off their heads, then it may not be equivalent. If it's to keep rain off their heads, a hood is better. If it's to keep the sun off their heads, a hood is better.

No, but it's better than nothing.

Re: Do you consider the hood of a jacket/coat a hat?
Hats are very different, too. A baseball cap won't do anything to keep in heat, but it will keep the sun off your eyes. A knit hat will keep your head warm, but is not good in the rain.
I think to truly answer the question, we need more info. I think most people are answering slightly different questions, based on what they assume the question really is.

Re: Do you consider the hood of a jacket/coat a hat?
I voted no. I actually prefer a coat with a removable hood because DS wears a hat most of the time. When we'd go sleigh riding or if it was really cold out or in actual snow, I'd put the hood on over the hat to protect his neck (his ears are covered by most of his hats).
In a pinch, sure. But DS's hood spent most of the winter in the closet.

Re: Do you consider the hood of a jacket/coat a hat?
no....not in winter. DD needs a toque on. needs to cover her ears so they dont get the wind in them and keep her head nice and warm.

Re: Do you consider the hood of a jacket/coat a hat?
No, not the same thing to me.
During the winter, I make sure both of my girls have hats that cover their ears. They're not always the cutest hats (esp. as they get older) but I like the wind away from their ears.
