Who picks out babtism gown? Parents or God Mother?
I know it is tradition for the God Mother to buy the baptism gown but is she supposed to pick it out as well??? TIA

We just went this past weekend to look for DD's gown.
The Godmother & I went together...I picked 2 and she picked from those...we came to an agreement, although we had similar taste.
She did pay for it. I let her completely choose the shoes, they weren't that important to me.

In my family the GodMother goes shopping with you and she then pays for it. My SIL is godmother to DD We both fell in love with the dress.

All of you are on the same page as me. I spoke to my sil (God Mother) and she told me it was tradition for her to just go buy it, pick it out and then surprise the baby (and us) with it. I almost fainted, I said I never heard that and I would like to go with her. But she then said she has a certain style in mind but wants me to like it. She doesn't want anything frilly or gaudy.

I went with my sister who is DS godmother - but did not ask her to pay for the outfit. We did and split it with my mom. If this baby is a girl - we will buy a new outfit but I will not have my cousin, who is the godmother, buy it. Just personal preference.

When we had DD christening the godmother came with me (my sister) and she bought it, I picked it out, but she loved it and would have picked it as well.
For her daughter, I am the godmother, we went together....I bought it, she picked it out...I loved it too!
To answer your question, i think the decision should be up to the mother/parent.

Well now I feel horrible. I am a godmother and had never heard of this tradition. My family and friends (mostly Irish) just buy or make their own or use one handed down. Is this really common? I am feeling pretty bad now - looks like I dropped the ball.

My sister and I did some online window shopping exchanging ideas and stores but she had the ultimate decision in my nephew/godson's outfit.

Try not to feel bad. Traditions from family to family vary and if they had expectations they should have mentioned it to you. Besides, it's not about the outfit, it's about your relationship with the baby and the parents. 
My niece wore the same gown my sister & I wore so her Godmother bought her some Christmas outfits (the christening was in Nov).

for my godson i went with my SIL to pick it out, so we picked it out together, but i would have gotten anything she wanted....
for my DD, i had my wedding gown made into a dress so the godmother didnt have any part in that.

Don't feel bad every family has their own traditions. I am the Godmother to my friends DD when she was baptized I bought the dress because that was their tradition. In my family the parents buy the outfit and the Godparents give when they want...usually Jewelry.

Parents pick. To clarify further, it's all about the mom
Godparents may offer to pay for the gown but I wouldn't necessarily expect it.

In my family the parents pick it out and pay for it and the godparents buy the cross. DS wore the same gown DH wore.

I think it really depends on your personal traditions. In our family the parents pick and buy the gown.

I didn't know about this tradition either, and apparently neither did my sister (the godmother). DH and I bought DS' baptism outfit ourselves.

I actually asked the godmother where I can buy a cheap outfit not knowing that she was supposed to buy it. She then told me that she would buy it and that we could go shopping together.
