I'm not a parent yet, so I'm sorry to crash and I know that I don't have any leg to stand on, but I'm so surprised to read these responses. My elementary school had nap time through first grade, and I missed it after that. I still like taking naps to this day, as do many of my friends and colleagues. I think that the human body (like most animals') is designed for a long sleep at night and a short sleep during the day. That's where the siesta comes from, and long before that, the ancient Romans' "sexta".
If only our companies allowed us to take naps, we'd probably be more productive in the late afternoon. There's a reason Google, one of the most innovative and successful companies in the world, offers employees "napping pods".
So anyway, I'll get down off my now, but it does surprise me that so many parents would discourage a rest period, even if just for a short time. (I get that an hour might be extreme.)
It's different when it's an hour long as opposed to let's say 20 minutes. We are also talking about 5 year olds. Most of them gave up naps years ago. Of course there may be a handful who still nap, but most do not. My daughter can't stay still longer than 5 minutes..so for an hour rest, it is ridiculous. Also, this is private school where I pay a lot of money and an hour of her day is going to her getting hysterical because she has to rest for an hour. If we lived somewhere where we were used to slowing down during the day and taking cat naps, ok...but we don't. I get what you are saying..BUT..it is different when you are dealing with kids. You cannot dictate to them that they should NAP NOW when they become a certain age.
I see what you mean. It's different for an adult who decides when to nap based on how they're feeling. I wonder now, because I went to a very expensive private school as well, if they had complaints about this back then. I don't remember it being an issue, but granted, I was 6, so I guess I probably wouldn't have known.

I'm surprised that schools are still having nap time at all! A quick 5-7 minute "rest" after recess makes sense. However, Kindergarten is highly academic now, and I honestly don't know where napping would fit in during the day. I would be angry if I were you, too!
