I had the same problem with my Shamrock. Its a lot of patience and consistency. Do you have her in a crate? The crates will help a lot. In the morning as soon as you get her up bring her right outside. When she goes make sure you praise her. After she eats bring her outside again. During the day when she is out of the crate try to confine her to 1 room- if you see her sniffing around bring her right outside. I keep the leash on Shamrock so I can just grab it an go. Shamrock caught on pretty quickly when he needs to go he goes over to the door to let me know. My pup is now 6 months and is doing great. Yes he has accidents- especially when he is playing and forgets to let me know he has to go out. But it takes a lot of patience.

Good luck

ITA with the crate training, it makes life much easier. Just make sure you don't get a crate that's TOO big. If dogs have too much room in their crate, they sometimes go to the bathroom in the corner. If the crate is just the right size for them, then they won't do that. We used to crate our dogs during the day so they wouldn't go in the house and chew on things but now that they are older, they don't need their crates anymore. In fact, we just keep it around becaused one of them LIKES it. It's her room. Any time you give her a treat, she runs to her crate to chow down on it. When she does something bad she runs to her crate, even if she doesn't get caught. It's pretty amusing. Chat Icon

Re: Any housebreaking help?

Okay so now fill me in on the crate. We have one but didn't put it together yet. Right now she stays in the big bathroom downstairs when she is alone and when we are with her the den is all hers (right off the bathroom). She has been sleeping on a blanket in the bathroom. Do I keep her in the crate over night and whenever she will be alone? Do I put a blanket in there? What if she pees or poops in there and is stuck with it for a few hours? So many questions!!!

It really depends on what you want to do and how long you are gone for. Puppies, of course, have smaller bladders so there's a possibility that she could go in the crate while you're gone and be stuck in it. But if the crate is the right size for her (not too big) then chances are she'll hold it until you get home. Dogs tend not to go to the bathroom where they sleep so once she gets used to the idea of the crate as her "room", I guarantee she'll do everything in her power not to go in there. Personally, I don't keep my dogs crated at night. I like them to sleep in our room with us and I feel badly since she would have been in the crate all day while we were at work. That being said, sometimes she goes and sleeps in her crate anyway. Like I said, it's her room and she loves it in there! Our older dog doesn't even have a crate anymore though since he wants nothing to do with it. He's not interested and he doesn't need it.
