racing heart

anyone get episodes where it feels like your heart is racing and you are very aware of your heartbeat? And also extremely exhausted when it happens? I know the answer will be go to the doctor, and I probably will eventually. It's been happening a little more frequently recently. Like once a week. Out of the blue my heart starts racing, I feel like I need to put my head down on my desk and take a nap, and I get a little short of breath. I just saw my cardiologist for a work up in December and I was fine. I'm starting to keep a log and figure I will go for a check up at the end of the year.

Re: racing heart

both my mom and my MIL had episodes like these. I'd highly recommend going to the doctor asap- not to alarm you but they had some issue which i cant remember the name but it was a problem with their heart's "electric" and had to be corrected with a simple surgery. If it's nothing, at least you have peace of mind!

Re: racing heart

I'm sorry you're going through this, I know how scary it can be bc I have something like that which is called vasal vagal syncopy. Basically I have an overly rapid heart rate. I get extremely out of breath and my heart races just doing simple things like walking up a flight of stairs.

I went to the dr a few years ago for it bc I couldn't handle it anymore. He performed a cardiac ablation on me which was not too invasive, I didn't have any major arrythmia's though so it didn't help. He put me on Toprol which is a beta blocker and I have been on ever since.

The type of dr you need to see is called an electrophysiologist. I go to an amazing dr in St. Francis hospital. His name is Dr. Levine, but all the drs are great there. Hard to get an appt bc they're so good but its worth it, they know their stuff. LMK if you have any other questions. Feel better and good luck!

I got that all the time. I felt like my heart was going to jump out of my body! I went for several tests with my cardiologist, turns out I have a lot of adrenlaine in my body. He put me on A VERY MILD adrenaline blocker and I feel great now! I never have any symptoms anymore at all. It is the lowest dose you can get and I then cut it in half but it really did the trick! Hope you feel better soon!!!

Re: racing heart

I used to get that. Mostly stress induced or around my period. For me, it was nothing but a slight arrythmia that did not require tx. I only get it occasionally these days.

Anxiety? You should see a Dr though.

This does happen to me, more so being pregnant. My sister is a physicians assistant, specializing in cardiology and she said most of the time it is caused by dehydration.

I had this after I had DD#1 it turned out I had postpartum thyroiditis and was in hyperthyroid stage of it. Have you had your thyroid checked? If it isn't your thyroid I would check again with the cardiologist.

Re: racing heart

you need to see an electrophysiologist, not just a cardiologist. I complained of a racing heart for 5 years, got every test and holter monitor done and nothing came up. They convinced me it was anxiety. Finally saw Dr. Levine at the arrhythmia center at St. Francis and another 30 day holter monitor showed I had SVT (supra ventricular tachycardia). If it starts racing out of nowhere, this may be what you have as well. CVS sells OMRON blood pressure monitors that are very good at taking heart rate. It's a good idea to know just how high your heart rate is. With SVT, unless you are being monitored at the very moment it starts, you will never know if you have it. I had a cardiac ablation to get rid of the electrical pathway and I also take Atenolol, a beta blocker.

I agree on the electrophysiologist. I went through 3 of them, though. I liked Dr. Saverio Barbera. I've worn monitors for a month at a time but the first time I wore them something showed right away. I was on medication that I was later able to wean off of but I have a slightly different diagnosis from SVT. I have symptoms at times but not like it used to be.

Re: racing heart

I'm in the minority here but it sounds like palpatations to me. I've had them for years. I would just start out seeing a cardiologist and go from there. If it is palpatations, it's not really a big issue. They're fairly common.

Re: racing heart

My brother had this, and it was a very serious issue that needed surgery.

Please go to the doctor, at least to be checked out.

Thanks everyone. I will have it checked out. It hasn't been as bad this week, but I will still get it checked out.
