Please Help, WWYD?

I really dont know what to do so I am hoping you ladies can help. 2 years ago DH's sister had a baby and they were talking about how they were having to heat the house higher than they normally would because of the baby and were thinking maybe they should get a stand alone heater for just that room. I had a "portable" AC unit, it sits in the room and you put just the vent out the window and it also works as a heater. My mom bought this for me when I was living on my own because I had strange windows and couldnt put a normal AC unit in them. Since DH and I moved in together I didnt need it and it was just sitting in our spare bedroom. I told them that we weren't using it right now and they could borrow it for the babies room. Here is my dilemma... I now want it back after lending it to them. I am PG with my first and our spare bedroom which will be the nursery stays so cold in the winter, usually at least 5 degrees colder than the rest of the house. The only way it will get warm is if you leave the door open and the rest of the houses heat filters in. I am obviously now going to need a heater for that room. The other problem is that they are also PG again and will be needing a heater too. I told DH that we LENT it to them and they know that and we need to ask for it back and he says we can't do that and will just need to buy a new one. I don't feel we should have to buy a new one, we didnt give it to them and those things are not cheap... this was like a $450 unit. What would you do... Ask for it back because you loaned it to them and now you need it or just buy a new one? Chat Icon

I am siding with your DH. Although you did "loan" it to them, it doesn't sound like you put a time on it or specifically said for them to give it back after a season or two or ever (or did you, correct me if i'm wrong). I think it will make you look petty at this point to ask for it back so I would personally just s*ck it up and buy a new one. They probably have something even better out now for your new baby anyway Chat Icon

Do you only need it for the heat, or do you need it for the AC as well? if it's just for heat, they are really cheap. Walmart has over 100 space heaters for under $50.

If you want to come to Ronkonkoma, you can have one of mine for free. I bought 4 or 5 of them years ago, but we had our house redone, so I've only used one or two of them in the basement in the winter once in a while. I don't see a need for all of the ones we have.

I think it's all on how you approach it.

If you truly lent it to them - with that understanding, then say "We're going to need the AC back in (insert month) because we have the same problem with our rooms, but this guy on the parenting messageboard has a space heater you can have for free. Do you want me to pick it up for you?"

I see no reason why you should go out & buy a $450 unit that you lent out.

If you gave it to them, then you can go buy it but before buying it say "Hey can you get me the model number of the AC thing. We need to get one for the baby's room." & then hope they offer it up.Chat Icon

We told them that we didnt need it right now and that we would just let them know when we needed it back.

Unfortunately we will need it for the AC as well. Considering that room stays much colder in the winter it also stays much warmer in the summer.

In that case, I would change my vote and ask for it back.... For $40, I wouldn't ask for something back from a friend, but for $400+, I would.

I would totally ask for it back! IMO, if they knew your situation they would probably offer, so I would just tell them that unfortunatly now your in the same situation as they are and you're going to need it back Im sure they will understand. To me, it doesnt sound petty at all. If someone should have to geta new unit now, it should be them, not you!

I would totally ask for it back. I'd give them a heads up as to when so that they can buy their own if they decide to.

Re: Please Help, WWYD?

I would just be upfront with them and ask it back, and explain what you need it for.

Tell them that you will need it for the baby's room, and that it was an expensive unit that you'd like to not have to purchase again.

Hopefully they will be understanding.

Not to be a complete jerk, but if they've had it for 2 years then they've had the 2 years to save up the money and buy a unit for themselves! It is yours and you are entitled to have it back!
