Playdates at Kindergarten level.

DD got asked to go on two playdates next week. One mom said "just tell her to take the bus home with X"...my DD doesn't take the bus, we have never been to this persons home, I only met them this year although as it turns out I know her sister but only because she works in my doctors office. SO am I being neurotic because I said that I would drop DD off to their house after school?

They seem very nice people but still.....I dont want to baby DD by staying there and to be honest I dont think the other mom would want me to stay but it feels weird to me....

Also how long do after school play dates typically last?

I would never send my DD to someone's house if I do not know the family. Not on the bus, not upon a drop off...no way! I think your first playdate should include you and the mom so that you get to know her.

Thanks Chat Icon that's how I feel but I wasn't sure if I was out of line.

I am kind of in a bind though as DS will be with me and he is 2 and if I stay for the play date he will want to play with my DD and her friend and I dont want to cramp their play date either....Uggghhhh.....

You could speak to the teacher and ask how the children get a long first. Maybe ask the mom to meet at the park instead, or make an excuse that it would have to be a quick 1st playdate because of _____.

I am new to this playdate thing as well and I would not be comfortable just leaving my DS at someone's house I do not know. I am more comfortable with public playdates.

Re: Playdates at Kindergarten level.

Thank you all SO much. I hate that I have to second guess my parenting sometimes. I always seem to be the neurotic mom so when a seemingly nice mom asks to have my DD over for a playdate and I still got nervous it made me wonder if I was overreacting. THANK YOU for making me feel like I can stick to my mommy gunsChat Icon

This kid takes the bus so I don't know if the mom will do a public place kind of play date after school...I might throw it out there and see how she reacts.

My DD did ask if they had a dog, cat etc at the house so I might use that as an excuse and say she is a bit nervous about going by herself and maybe we could do the park a few times until she got used to them.

You are a good mom with valid concerns. Part of why I would want to know the family is to see if they have pets. My DD is not nervous around animals but if they have a cat or dog I would want to at least experience the general nature of the dog---skiddish, high energy, etc. Who knows if they smoke in the house and you might not like that (trying to be very PC hereChat Icon ). I think you need to know a lot about a family & the way they live before you send you child there and you have that right for sure.

Re: Playdates at Kindergarten level.

I am a bit paranoid about dropping my kids off for playdates. I always think the worst, but both DH and I have valid reasons why we are uncomfortable with it. With that being said Roman has a playdate tomorrow with a new friend and his Mom was very cool and understood I did not feel comfortable sending him on the the bus with this kid or him even being at their house when I have never been there before. I am driving him and bringing all of the kids which works out in this case because she has 2 younger ones as well.

I guess it will be on a case by case basis for me going foward.

So to answer your question, I don't think you're being neurotic at all.

I agree. Any playdate he has been on- if it's going to someone's house-I go with him and if it's a child coming over my house the moms have stayed.
