Uggggggh! Found a flea

My dog has been licking and scratching the past few days and I applied Frontline this morning (3 days before he was due for it) and tonight we found 2 fleas running on his belly!Chat Icon We JUST let him start sleeping in our bed out if guilt that we just had a baby so he gets less attention. O just threw my bedding on the wash on hot and vacuumed the carpet in the living room and the throw rug in the dining room & DDs room. Rest of the house is Harappa floors.

What else can I do to prevent infestation? I haven't seen fleas around, just on him.

He gets Frontline monthly, but I feel like whenever he gets a bath it wears off sooner!Chat Icon

This is the LAST thing i need right now with a 5 month old!

Re: Uggggggh! Found a flea

If you apply it correctly, each month, on time, you should NOT have a problem.

My dogs get Frontline and I have found fleas on them or in my home on 3 occasions. Every time the fleas (one time it was 2 fleas, other 2 times it was one flea on the floor) are half dead and barely moving.

I have not gotten an infestation nor did I see more after finding those fleas (each incident was months and months apart).

Just on Monday, I found a half dead flea on my bathroom floor. I am sure the Frontline is working, otherwise I would have had an infestation many months ago. I use it monthly, religously, YEAR round b/c fleas can survive indoors in the winter.

And each occasion I saw one, I did not do anything special to my home, just washed my dogs bedding on hot (but I do that often anyway).

My dog def picked this flea up in my Yard. Randon animals pass through so that's why.

And funny, it seemed my dog picked up fleas the start of the spring and then again now in the fall.

If you are using the product as directed, you really should beok. Also, I believe not bathing your dog too much helps b/c it keeps the oil on their body. I only bathe my dogs about once a mth.

Thanks! Ever since we got fleas last year in our apt I apply the frontline religiously! We just moved into our house and I REALLY dont want to battle fleas again!

He usually gets groomed every 6 weeks and then gets FL a few days after the groomer, but he threw up and is face stunk so I gave him a bathe mid month... Should have reapplied after but forgot! Chat Icon

Im keeping my fingers crossed that the FL gets them all before they lay eggs!

So were you late with the frontline this month?

You do not need to reapply after a bath. As long as you bathe about 48 hrs after the application, they say it's ok. I personally don't like to bathe more than once a mth if not really needed b/c IMO the oils in the fur are what contain the FL and I don't like to remove that. However, they say it's ok to bathe...who knows?

Like you, I am paranoid bc my parents house got fleas when I was a kid. Way before products like FL existed. It was awful so I always religiously apply FL as well. I do get nervous if I see a flea, who wants to see them? But I know that they die and don't reproduce b/c I never see them again, my dogs don't have flea dirt or scratch and then I don't see a flea or any signs of a flea for a long time.

As I said I just found one Monday, it was on my tile bathroom floor and it was dying. I think when my dog ran in, it fell off of him.

Nope, not late actually applied 3 days early today bc of the scratching, then noticed the actual fleas on him after the FL which I think means it working bc it says they get hyper excited and then die. I like to time the FL for 3 days after he gets groomed, but I had to give him a bath about 2 weeks after I applied FL and prob should have reapplied earlier bc I feel like the bath makes it less affective even tho it's not supposed to!

I just feel bad bc he'll be back in the crate tonight after weeks of sleeping in our bed. Chat Icon At least until he is 100% flea free!

Re: Uggggggh! Found a flea

Dont worry about the bath. I really dont think that should be a problem. Reapplying early isnt really recommended, so I would not do it more than 2 days early.

Also...this should make you feel better, but FL supposedly works for 2 mths (one application) for fleas. I have read numerous things that said the flea killing power works 2 mths, whereas the tick killing power only one month, from one application. Even FL will tell you that it may kill fleas for up to 2 mths (one dose) but that rec dose is once a mth (esp re ticks). So that always makes me feel better that maybe it works for longer than they even list the dose for. KWIM?

Dont worry. When my DD was about 5 or 6 mths old, I found a flea on my dogs bedding. All I did was wash the bedding and I never saw another flea after that incident. It also looked half dead and was moving slowly. That was at my old house and I never saw another flea in my old house again (then I moved about a year+ later).

So dont worry! I think you are good! Just check your dog occasionally. Buy a flea comb too, so if you do find a flea, you can comb it off and drown it in some sudshy water with dish washing detergent (dawn or something like that). Also...if you do find a flea on your dog or other, I read a helpful hint to remove the flea or grab it with a peice of tape, so you can trap it that way then flush it!!!

HTH, I have been there, esp worrying with a baby in the house. I know what you mean.Chat Icon

Re: Uggggggh! Found a flea

My Dog takes Sentinel which is an oral flea infestation preventor. Once in a while we will have doggy play dates...where BIL brings a dog over for the day or DH's friend brings a dog over for the day...and afterwards I will sometimes find a flea on Charlie. It freaked me out at first....that these other dogs were brigning fleas into the house and I forbade DH to invite his friends over to watch football and allow them to bring their dogs!

Well, I guess I freaked out for no reason because in both cases it was a one time deal. I got the flea, killed it, and never saw anymore after that so I guess the medicine she takes is working!

So I applied the FL yesterday @ 10am...(a few days before he was due for it, I was also on time last month!) I just found and removed 2 fleas from his belly (used goobsters technique with the comb and sudsy water, thanks!) but my question is WHY does he still have live fleas on him if FL says it kills within 12 hours?!?! Re: Uggggggh! Found a flea

Just b/c you applied it, you dont know what time the fleas jumped on him? Where is he going to the bathroom? Your yard, neighborhood walks? He could be picking them up daily outside and the ones you see are new.

Ooooooo! I didn't think of this! I hope this is why! He goes in the yard & on a small walk at night! I haven't found them in my house yet except for on the dog, so hopefully the FL is working and they are not laying eggs and spreading! I washed his bedding this morning and will again tomorrow too!

This happened to us. Turns out someone in my neighborhood has outdoor cats and had a big infestation. When we stopped going that way, my dops stopped getting fleas. So yes, they could be new fleas daily from outside if the spot he walks in is infested.

Btu even if you find them in your home, they could be jumping off yoru dog. The few I have found in my current home, I found them off my dog (but my dog was laying nearby). One time we even saw it JUMP off my dog after he came in from outside. DH squashed that one. So I know that flea hitched a ride from outside.
