Re: What age did your DC stop believing in Santa?

DS had just turned 9 when he stopped believing, but he had been questioning for awhile. It seems like his group of friends held onto it for awhile.

I had completely stopped believing by 7 or so, if I remember correctly.

DD is 5 and is still a staunch believer.

Funny you posted this, DD is in K and keeps insisting on sitting in the back of the bus with the big kids. THis morning my DH was like "they're going to ruin santa for her!!!" all stressed out.

Re: What age did your DC stop believing in Santa?

DC never believed. Every year, though, we emphasize that he's a symbol of Christmas, and to not insist to other kids that he doesn't exist. I don't DC to be "that kid"... the one that ruined Christmas for their classmates.... Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: What age did your DC stop believing in Santa?

My nephew just stopped about a year ago (he's 9 now).

I knew by 2nd grade, but I had 3 older sisters.

I do remember my 4th grade teacher telling all of us on the 1st day of school that there was no Santa. I really hope there weren't kids who still believed b/c I would have been crushed if I still believed.

Re: What age did your DC stop believing in Santa?

My oldest is in 4th grade and last summer he said "Some kids at school say it's your parents that buy the presents and pretend it's Santa" He's really on the fence...I've flim flammed him with my replies in the past bc I don't want to break the bubble. Of course once he knows, my 2nd grader will know...my Kindergartener...unless I can bribe him but he'll fold under pressure. *Sigh* So my kids still believe for now

When I taught 7th grade, I had a few students who still beleived and I played along with them! I loved it! It was so good to see such innoncence in a world where chidlren are pushed and pushed to grow up!

I think it is so cool to see that my 4 yr olds really get it this year! Love it!

My son is 10 and has asked me for 2 years or so. I lied. Chat Icon I do feel bad when he asked me directly, but he is 100% the kind of kid who will go around and tell everyone in school, his little brother etc and I just couldnt do it to everyone. So I think if he asks me again Ill tell him b/c hes getting more mature now.

Re: What age did your DC stop believing in Santa?

DS will be 9 in a few weeks and he still believes. He cam up with the idea that some kids don't believe and that's why the parents have to get them gifts.

He also knows that we buys him and his brother stuff for xmas too.

He hasn't asked me if Santa is real or not. Im not sure what I will say if he does ask.

Re: What age did your DC stop believing in Santa?

My niece pretended to believe in Santa for years. She knew that if she "believed", Santa had an almost unlimited budget for gifts. Once she stopped believing, she wouldn't get the really big gifts. She admitted this to DW at one point. Smart kid.... Chat Icon Chat Icon
BTW, now that she officially doesn't believe, her gift haul is much smaller....

Re: What age did your DC stop believing in Santa?

Emily still believes and most of her friends still believe. Last year in Kindergarten she came home from school saying that some of her friends told her that Santa wasn't real, and what was wrong with them? They weren't gonna get any presents! Chat Icon We always told her that Santa comes to those who believe Chat Icon so maybe that is going to keep her believing longer!

I really hope she holds onto it for at least a few more years. It makes this time of year so exciting!

I don't remember how old I was, maybe 11 or so? There is really no reason to outright tell them there is no such thing. Let them believe as long as they want to believe. I don't think kids get picked on for believing in Santa Chat Icon

Re: What age did your DC stop believing in Santa?

In my Pre-K class last year a student from India told a group of kids that Santa doesn't exist & it's their parents.

It was a huge deal. I told them Santa is the spirit of Christmas & of course he exists & we had a big discussion. Yet the next day I got concerned parents asking me what happened & other parents very upset over the child that "told."

My DS is 11 and still believes. I thought I would do the same thing too this year (be less careful), but I'm so afraid he's going to tell my 9 and 10 year old. I think I'm still playing along more for me...they probably all have their doubts. The fact the the whole "Santa" thing is just about over makes me sad.Chat Icon

Just for the record, we still have a toothfairy and an Easter bunny that comes around here too. I was going to throw the towel in on the toothfairy, but I figured that would bring questions up about Santa.

The Tooth Fairy was here last night. DD is too afraid of her coming into her room, that we have to put the tooth in a bowl outside her bedroom door. :)

The tooth fairy and Easter Bunny made me think of when my Mom told me about Santa. I was in the 3rd grade and like others, classmates got me questioning. I asked outright one day, right after the holiday season had ended. My mom started to cry and told me, "Yes Mommy is Santa Claus...just like I am the Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy" Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon I questioned the big guy in the red suit but not the 6 foot bunny or the fairy with wings flying in my bedroom to steal my teeth. I hadn't even thought for a second they weren't real!! Triple whammy that day!

I hope Megan believes forever. It's a long standing joke in my family that we still believe. My Mom and I have things hung up all over the house at Christmas with the saying "This House Believes." It's just so magical. I never want my baby losing that magic.
