Spin Off of Taking Kids out of school: Disney?

Why does everyone keep saying a Disney trip would be ok to take kids out of school for?

My family went to Disney once when I was little and no one missed school for it.

I understand it is hot there, and crowded, but IMHO, I don't think it is so special that it justifies missing school for.....

Flame away.

I think it depends on the grade the child is in. Also, from what i understand, the main reason parents whose to go during the school year is that during school breaks the price is double of what they pay on just a regular school week.

I don't either but other families have different priorities.

I could see missing the day before a holiday if the airfare was signficant.

And as I said if it was a once in a lifetime trip or a family event, I do think differently.

We have gone the last 2 years at the end of July, because I am a teacher and I can't just pull my kids out. We make the best of it. It's hot but the kids don't notice it as much as I do!

From my own experience:

growing up, we never had money to go to Disney I think. We never went.

Until I was in the 11th grade. And even then, we DROVE down to save money. So that took an extra 4 days of my vacation (2 days there, 2 days back). We also went during a cheap time of year.

All the teachers gave me grief.

One teacher went as far as to say he was going to make me do extra-credit on top of the regular work (and the extra credit was to summarize in 3 pages an article a day in the newspaper for 30 days -- so, basically, a 90 page paper.) -- he said if I didn't do it, he'd give me an incomplete.

I was a B student. Gave no one issues. Always on time. Always respectful.

I think he was being a pr1ck.

Regardless, it was the best time ever - we had so much fun as a family.

No regrets.

I don't care if it's Disney or the Jersey shore. I think family time is as valuable as school time. I don't know about you, but I barely remember elementary school, but I do remember family trips. I'm not trying to devalue school, truely I'm not, I just don't see why missing a couple of days to make memories is such a big deal.

I agree with the OP completely. I value education. There is plenty of time for vacations. We plan around school.
Of course if it was a family wedding or event I might reconsider but school is a priority in our home.

Having never been to Disney World myself, I'm always more amazed that people continue to go. Pretty much every question or thread I've seen on here talks about how to deal with hour plus lines, the easiest way to get to the park when staying at a Disney hotel, making reservations for dinner many, many months ahead of time...it always sounds so stressful to plan, it seems like a nightmare of a trip. Haha...yes, that was true the first time I went as well--in August 2004 pre-kids. I wanted to die, it was about a billion degrees and CROWDED! I do not do well in heat--to the point of heat prostration. We went in November 2009 with the girls and it was an absolute pleasure--no lines, nice temperature. THAT is why we went that time of year. We took the children (well, really only my older DD who was in prek at the time) out of school for 2.5 days. I will repeat that I would never take my child out for a week, for that or any trip.

I really dont get why people cant accept that people do things other ways. Life isnt one size fits all. I hate the "this is how I feel, flame away" BS.

I value education as well but a trip like this is an experience and if they are young enough to not be greatly affected by the missed days and there is a significant savings, be it cost or time, it is something I would consider. Life experience is an education in itself. We work way too hard to not have some fun once in a while.

I would never, but I wouldn't judge someone who does. Education is our first priority here, I never missed a day of school for anything other than being really sick. My DS is in 2nd grade and had only missed 2 days in his 2+ years of school.

We are planning a big trip to the Bahamas with the kids - and the 10 days we are looking to go will be when the kids are not in school. They also get a nice week's vacation with the family every August, and I don't think they are missing out on anything. IMO, the kids are off 2 months each summer and have weeks + off here and there, so it's not like it's they are in school year round and you don't have a choice. I understand the expense of going when everyone else is off, but to me, a vacation *is* and expense and I take it from there.
