Unclaimed money

So I just saw a post about this (Thanks dumpster baby!!) and I found my grandfather on my dads side has money on there! I dont know what to do?! It says I need a copy of his death certificate (which I may have) but it says I need proof of my relationship to this address (his address from over 25 years ago!) He died when I was about 5 and my father passed when I was 10, anyone know what kind of documentation that might be? I am clueless.

Call up the state and ask them on Monday. Did he have a lease or a mortgage? If it was a mortgage it will likely be a lot easier as you can call the town records department and ask for the property division. There you can get the actual deed of record where it would list the chain of ownership for the property. It should have your grandfather's name on that list. You would likely have to pay a small fee for a copy of the page.

If it was a lease, do you have access to any old files that might contain it? The only thing I can think of is to contact the phone or electric company to see if he had service and they have records going back that far. I am not sure they will but it is worth a chance. Good luck.

From what I can remember being told he rented the upstairs area of a house (there was a business run in the bottom half) with a few older men. I do not have access to anything - after my father passed his side of the family just disappeared. We got one message from my dads sister about 7- years ago that she was battling cancer on our answering machine and when we called the number back it was a disconnected number. So there is NO contact with that side of the family whatsoever, its pretty sad.

I am so sorry for your losses. I would call and explain everything. See what they can suggest.

I know where I work for someone to pick up property from someone that has died you need a Letter Of Administration from Surrogates Court.
