Extraction or Root Canal for a baby tooth?
I feel horrible my DD has such bad teeth problems already and feel even worse for never taking her to a PEDIATRIC dentist. She's had several cavaties filled and had two in her front teeth which I was advised to leave since they would fall out.
Fast foward a month and DD is really complaining and her tooth is turning grey. I took her to Melville Kids and Dr. Michelle says she should do a baby root canal not extract because she is only 4 and since she got her teeth late she'd probably get her next set later on (around 8). I agree. DH is adamant about her not being put through that and wants the tooth extracted. What would you do? Should I get another consultation? Has anyone been through this with their DC?

DS just went through this. First it turned grey, but dentist wasn't worried. Then it went bad. Unfortunately, since DS is getting chemotherapy, they were worried about infection and his oncologists wanted it extracted. We went to a pediatric dentist and they said that they would go into fill it, but if they got too close to the root, they would extract, since root canal has slight risk of infection.
Everyone who looked at it wanted it to be pulled, but when the dentist went in, she was able to save the tooth with just a filling. Personally, I would go with what the ped dentist recommends, this is their expertise.
Of course, our situation is different, but It seemed to me that a baby root canal is preferable for typical cases. If it is extracted, they need to put a spacer in or DC will need braces.

Bro is going to dental school, and he said a while ago that you really need to keep the baby teeth in the mouth as much as possible, as it guides the adult teeth to where they are supposed to end up, and keeps the other baby teeth in the right spots.

DS had a root canal and cap done on a baby tooth when he was 4. Its on a molar and we opted to go this route to try and keep his teeth properly spaced. We used That Broadway Simle in Massapequa and they were wonderful with him. No trama or drama. If he were older/closer to the age he would naturally loose the tooth we may have gone with an extraction.

From my own personal experience, root canals do not always work. I had 2 root canals on the same tooth and now have to have it removed anyway.
Granted, (obviously) this is an adult tooth.

I would (and did!) get another consultation. I brought them out of pocket to my dentist (Dr. Laura Spivack). She was able to save several of the teeth. My other dentist missed them for months of checks up & then insisted had to be pulled.

I agree -- I would definitely get another opinion.
My kids go to an awesome pediatric dentist in Smithtown -- Dr. Glen Korsen 265-3266. He's fantastic!!

I have been a dental assistant for 15 yrs. I have worked for a few different Dr's. They all feel the same. Keep the baby teeth as long as possible. Unless DC was at the age where the teeth were expected to be lost soon, they should always try to be saved. Truthfully, baby root canals are not much more extensive procedure wise than a filling. NOT anything like an adult root canal. if it were my DC, and she is 5.5 yrs old - I would most definately go for the root canal. HTH

which tooth? front tooth- definitly pull, it has NO issues with spacing. back tooth- DEFINITLY save. you can FM me, i know a lot about this.

. Agreed 100%! I was an asst for 7 years and RDH now 11 yrs. All the experts here agree.
