Grief (Bereavement) Counseling..Free services?
I am hoping someone out there can lead me in the right direction....
My uncle passed away a month ago leaving behind his wife and 2 children (one is 16, the other is 22 and disabled)
His wife doesn't drive and is on extremely limited income...She currently does not have health insurance (but should after the new year)...She herself I believe is possibly learning disabled perhaps (though there is no clinical diagnosis I am aware of)..She was 100% dependant on my uncle for everything
She is beside herself with grief, to the point I am worried for her....Not that she would harm herself purposely, but that she is in danger of a nervous breakdown....I have tried to comfort, console and guide her to the best of my ability but really think she needs to be under the care of a physician or at least some type of group or individual counseling ...its bad
Does anyone have a reccomendation ? She needs help fast....
I am also going to reach out to her local parish to see if they can direct me...
TIA

Definitely check out her parish and also check out the pastoral care department in the hospital. Her doctor could also help refer her to some places, and also look into mental health clinics that offer sliding scale services.

You could try contacting East End Hospice - they offer free berevement counseling. I dont know if it your aunt would be able to get there if she doesnt drive, but maybe they could point you towards something more local
East End Hospice
In the summers, they have a camp called Camp Good Grief for children who have experienced a loss, if your cousins are interested.

Re: Grief (Bereavement) Counseling..Free services?
If he died in a hospital, it might offer bereavement counseling. Give it a call. I called Sloan Kettering in NYC to find out about it for a friend who could barely function without crying weeks after losing someone there.
The counselor was excellent and helped her enormously. The sessions were private with lots of tissues supplied.
If the hospital doesn't have counseling, it probably has a social worker who can guide you and your aunt to services available in your aunt's area.
I am so sorry for your aunt, and her children. You are very kind to want to help her. Good luck.

Stonybrook has a sliding scale fee where grad students from psych do counseling. Range is based on income. approximate fees are usually around 20-25.

Re: Grief (Bereavement) Counseling..Free services?
I obviously mostly lurk but know about this topic, unfortunately.
I lost my husband six years ago. I went to bereavement through hospice. My husband passed suddenly at work. My friend called around and found me bereavement counseling at a hospice place (Sunnyside blvd. Woodbury). I didn't have a car or much money so they waived the fee. It wasn't expensive. At first I went to one on one counseling. She even came to my house because I had no car and a baby. After a few months I got a car and was able to join the bereavement group. It helped out tremendously and I have one best life long friend whom I met there.

Does your job have an EAP program? Mine has one where anyone in your family or extended family (even cousins) can receive free counseling.

Re: Grief (Bereavement) Counseling..Free services?
Wow...all great suggestions, thank you all so much !
Her job did give her the number to a place to call through them, and she finally put a call into them and spoke to a gentleman (I think its mainly a phone thing though , she really needs someone face to face)
Stony Brook I will try (thats where he was when he passed away, I'm actually suprised they didn't give her any resources, but it was really really quick)
To the PP who lost her DH, I am very sorry for your loss ...Thank you for sharing your story..I am hoping she will have just as positive experience as you once she finds the right place !
