Christmas Eve is the big one for DHs family. We always spend the eve with DHs family- they all rotate hosting. And then Christmas morning is just us at home. My sister usually has a lunch later in the day.

If it's not a year we go to my mom's in South Carolina, she will come up and my dad comes out from Queens for Christmas Eve at my house.

Both of DH's parents are deceased, so my in-laws are his brothers & their families. Normally they come to our house Christmas Day for dinner.

It was the same before Ann came along. Although now that I think of it, the year I was pregnant with her was the last year we hosted Christmas Day. The following year was at my BIL's house for the last holiday there before he sold it. And this year it's in his new place.

Thanksgiving is at our house with the entire LI family. Christmas Eve is at my mom's house, and Christmas Day is at BIL's house, which is next door to FIL's house.

It just works out easier for everyone with this method. It's worked for 22 years of being with DW, so why mess with it... Chat Icon

Christmas morning is for family. I'm lucky because my family is Jewish (and even luckier now because I am out of the country Chat Icon) but when we were on LI, we spent Christmas Eve in NJ with DH's aunt and their entire family. Christmas Morning was for us and the kids, and then we would go to my ILs in the early afternoon.

No offense to my ILs but I don't want to see them first thing in the morning on Christmas day, I don't want to see ANYONE that early LOL

I hear you. It just annoys me that we're spending the rest of the day with his family and it's not good enough. So they're going to punish my son and be spiteful about it.

My family hasn't been here in 3 years, so of course i'm not going to rush out of the house and leave them. But apparently that's what my in laws want because they should come first. Chat Icon My family doesn't count apparently.

I'm sorry, but there's no way I'd pack up and be anywhere on Christmas morning at 9am. That's like having to go to work! Chat Icon (And I love both of our families! I just mean the getting up early to get dressed to get everything we'd need for the day in the car, drive over, and be there by 9am thing).

No way. We spend Christmas morning at home. We wake up whatever time we like. We open presents, eat breakfast, chill out.

Both of our families celebrate Christmas on Christmas Eve. We usually host at our co-op and both sets of parents come and our siblings. We open presents close to midnight and everyone goes on their way. My birthday happens to be Christmas day so on top of everything else I feel like I am a little entitled to spend the day how I want. I grew up celebrating Christmas on the Eve and then Christmas day was mine to do as I pleased. Now that I am married and have DS, I enjoy spending it at home or maybe going out for a bit.

Xmas Eve - My family (parents, siblings, aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents)

Xmas Morning - Breakfast with my immediate family and gift exchange

Xmas Day - My DH's family (MIL, FIL, BIL and on alternate years my 2 SIL's)

Edit - I ALWAYS host Xmas morning and Xmas Day which makes my life easy!! This year I am also hosting Xmas Eve.

Re: do your parents/inlaws come to your house on xmas? (poll)

No one comes to our house. We go to my ILs on xmas eve and their tradition is they open all their presents then.

On xmas day we open presents at our house, then we go to my dads and have a late breakfast with him, then we go to my moms and open presents, then we go to my aunts and have dinner and open more presents.

Growing up my grandparents never came to us. We would usually see them for dinner.

we all go to in laws' house on Xmas Day to open presents. DH's bro and his family is there as well as his sister. They all exchange in the morning (around 9 am as well). Last year we didn't go because DD was sick. This year I guess we are going. Someone dresses up as Santa too. It's okay..I'd rather be at home though but it makes DH happy so I go.

we used to, pre baby and even last year when DS was 7 months.

this year, we are doing a brunch with EVERYONE at our house at 11 so we will open gifts as a family (just the three of us) when DS wakes up at 7am.

we are doing everything totally different this year.

Xmas eve - opening gifts at inlaws at 1pm (we used to do this xmas morning)

Dinner at my moms at 4pm

Xmas day - opening as a family (just us) at 7am
Brunch at my house for everyone at 11
Dinner at my aunt in laws at 430

Re: do your parents/inlaws come to your house on xmas? (poll)

That stinks, they are being totally irrational and spiteful IMO.

This has been a source of debate in our house for 5 years now, since DD was born. DH & his brother used to go to his mom's every morning Christmas Day for breakfast and stay through midnight Chat Icon I told him I didn't want to rush out of the house in the morning at all with the kids, I wanted to hang out, open presents, have a nice breakfast, etc. It has been a debate for years.

We are doing brunch with MIL this weekend to do the gift exchanging between her & our kids (and her gifts to us and our gifts to her) because I'm just not willing to sacrifice "our" time on Christmas morning at our house rushing around. So then on Christmas Day, we'll be here (my mom will actually be in town and staying with us, so she'll be here with us-- DH's mom is invited over too but she doesn't come because she hosts Christmas dinner and is preparing all morning) and will head to MIL's around 2pm to just open all the stockings. It is the best compromise we've had in 5 years. Though we do have to give up a full day the weekend before Christmas, which is ok this year, but some years is really tough.

This is our first year with DD and I told DH that Christmas morning is for the 3 of us, and we are not available to do anything with either family until after 12:30pm!

Every year before this we went to Mils house for Christmas morning presents/brunch( which is alway awkward and tension filled bc Mil and her kids don't have he best relationship). Then to DHs grandmothers for dinner and if FIL is in NY then we have to see him too. We see my parents on Christmas eve.

I'm not dragging my kids around the world on Christmas! So from now on we will start our own Christmas morning traditions of just us, open presents, have breakfast, etc before we journey around LI!

I have to say, I think your in laws are being extremely rude by saying what they did. Do they really expect you to ditch your family like that?!?! What does your dh say about it? It's not like they aren't going to he seeing you at all that day !!

Re: do your parents/inlaws come to your house on xmas? (poll)

Christmas eve is at my Aunt & Uncle's house in PA...we drive home that night and have Christmas morning with DD & my parents/bro & sis at our house. I cook an early dinner (about 2PM) and we relax, friends and family stop by at different points in the day, pick on food and dessert.

Every year since we've been married (this will be our 4th Christmas) I invite Dh's dad & stepmom since they are home alone all day. they decline every year. Last year i invited his dad for breakfast to see DD open her gifts on her first Christmas...his wife declined for him. We do Christmas with them the week before (so this Saturday).

IMO, Christmas is about the kids & family. My FIL chooses not to spend it with us or his ONLY grandchild...too bad for him!

Re: do your parents/inlaws come to your house on xmas? (poll)

Usually- Christmas Eve is spent with us running from one place to the next. We stop at FIL's for a couple of hours. We go to MIL's for a few hours. The the tradition in my family was to go to my Aunt's house at around 11pm Christmas Eve, open gifts at midnight and have breakfast at 2AM. Last year, after we left there we slept at my parents and DD slept terribly and Christmas was exhausting. We just don't want to do it anymore, so this year we're changing things up.

Christmas Eve EVE, we'll be spending at MILs for dinner with my BIL and new SIL because they're leaving for their honeymoon ON Christmas morning.

We will have Christmas Eve at our house this year. I am going to cook ahead of time and open our home to anyone who wants to come eat or just stop in and see DD. I want to have DD in bed at a decent time, after we put out cookies and milk. I want to spend time with DH putting out presents and just being together quietly. We will wake up Christmas morning and open presents as a family, then head to my mom's around 2ish and spend the rest of the day there.

We live a few towns a way from my BIL (same county) and my ILs live in Queens. They drive to us on Christmas Eve and drive back out to my BIL on Christmas Day. We all drive to them on New Year's Day.

I will say that my MIL is great in that she always tries to make sure that we are most comfortable since we have kids. It's not easy for them to go back and forth to Queens but they do it and never complain because they feel it would be harder on us. Chat Icon

Since Christmas eve is at Dhs cousins, we go to my MILs first & exchange with them & Dh.brother. my parents live OOS & come to us.

I host Christmas day but the eve is all about Dhs family so we exchange then even though my ils are at our house Xmas day.

that's really annoying.
Your IL's loss not yours! So be it if they want to act so childish and not come to dinner or stay in the morning for gift opening. They'll see how much they miss it and feel bad afterwards.

Re: do your parents/inlaws come to your house on xmas? (poll)

Ahhh the yearly fight of where we will be and who will do what. We already had ours out and I ended up a HUGE winner in the battleChat Icon

We live OOS from my parents but my brother and i are 10 minutes apart. My SIL was upset that I ALWAYS host both Christmas eve and Christmas day. Plus she has extended family in our state as well.

So we had it out and my husband's brother (who is the sweetest man) offered to host EVERYONE for Christmas eve since he has a huge house and no kids. So everyone is going there, my SIL extended family. Great no fighting.

Then for Christmas day, since she complained about me always "getting" to host, now she is doing Christmas dinner and I am off the hook for that meal too!

I love holiday fights that end in my favorChat Icon

Right now they don't but, I can see that changing as my DC get older.

In your case though, I feel they are being extremely selfish. You have good reason to stay home and you were spending the rest of the day with them anyway!
