Kindergarten misbehavior - is this normal or should I be worried?

So my son started K this year and he is doing great academically - he is learning a ton and is a very smart kid. Unfortunately, he has a little trouble in the "hands" department. Nothing major but he may get into a scuffle now and then over something, or playfully grab someone's arm or shirt without meaning any harm. Anyway, once in awhile I get a note from the teacher about it and we promptly sit him down and have a long talk and punish him in some way. But today it escalated to the principal's office. I am at my wit's end because I am afraid they will kick him out of school! Mind you, he has never hurt anybody, it's basically just misbehavior, but he just turned 5, isn't this normal? Anyone have any experience with this?

I do. My son has been to the office twice already. Chat Icon He's always been a active kid, and has trouble with impulse control.

They've never mentioned kicking him out of school, but they just started a behavior chart with him. It worked well in preschool for him. Maybe you can talk to the teacher about that.

This is what was implemented in my classroom when I taught K. Some children need a little extra reinforcement with impulse control, and behavior charts can help.

Yes, exactly, it's his impulse control! We don't have a behavior chart, but we do reward him for good behavior. The problem is that on a day to day basis we can't always be sure what is happening at school.

Do they just grow out of this phase?

They do grow out of it. DS went through it 3 years ago, and this year, DD is very familiar with the principal's office for a variety of reasons.... Chat Icon Chat Icon
