BF baby & no poop for a week
My DD is 4m, EBF and hasn't pooped since last Friday. That's 6 days. She usually goes once a day. This week she is generally pretty happy and smiling like usual, but a few times every hour she strains and pushes so hard that she spits up, cries, and needs to be consoled. I called my pediatrician two days ago and she said that it's normal for EBF babies to go a week without pooping. She said she'll see her Friday (tomorrow) if she still hasn't gone.
We've tried a glycerine suppository, the rectal thermometer, bicycling her legs, a warm bath... nothing has worked. I know my ped says it's normal to go a week, and so do the books, but the Moms I know say they've never heard of this and that it's ridiculous. I'm getting nervous because none of the "tricks" have worked.

Re: BF baby & no poop for a week
Someone posted on a thread recently that it was ok to go as long as 14 days but I agree with you- even a week seems long!
Can you ask the ped about maybe giving her a little prune juice?

Re: BF baby & no poop for a week
DS was ebf and starting at 11 weeks old until he was 6 months (when he started solids) he pooped once a week. It actually started off as once every 8th day and then after 2 months it changed to every 6th day. It was even at the same exact time (11 am!) It's totally normal as long as they're not in pain or uncomfortable. Constipation in infants has nothing to do with how often they go, but the consistency of it.
DD is 5.5 months and also ebf. At 4 months she stopped pooping everyday and has gone as long as 5 days without pooping, but generally goes every other day or every 3rd day.

Re: BF baby & no poop for a week
Ok, thanks. I have other moms telling me that I should insist on being seen today because it's not normal and DD could have a bowel obstruction. They're freaking me out!

Re: BF baby & no poop for a week
my ebf baby only went once a week a for months so that to me was normal
bm is very efficient form of fooed - i.e. less waste means less poop

Re: BF baby & no poop for a week
My DD went through this at about 5 months. I think it was due to the introduction of solids shortly before. What ended up working was, when she showed signs of pushing, laying her on her back, taking off her diaper and holding her knees up (gently pushing them bent all the way). You can (maybe unfortunately) see if she really has to go and at least my DD can't help but push when in this position. For us, this worked. The poop popped right out (with a few tears) and things began moving properly again.

Re: BF baby & no poop for a week
Not pooping I'd normal, straining isn't. The part that would concern me is the suppository not working. I've given DD one on a few occasions ( she's 4mo) and its worked in minutes. Maybe she's having a gas issue and that's what the straining is?

As long as he is passing gas, he is ok.. Try an ounce of prune juice or pear juice.. It will help him go.
