Dogs and Vacuum Cleaners!

Does anyone else's dog have a major problem with the vacuum cleaner?

Charlie is such a good girl! She barely makes a peep! She's a total lovamuffin!

Yet if I roll the vacuum out into the room and she is in there, she goes buck nutty and grabs hold of it with her jaws, growling like crazy!

I usually have to put her upstairs or outside when I vacuum, and I vacuum every day.

Oh how I'd love for her to realize that the vacuum cleaner is her friend and not her enemy!

Does anyone have any advice or tips?

Re: Dogs and Vacuum Cleaners!

She's already associated it negatively, so you'll need to break that with positivity.

We started by leaving the vacuum out, around the house. If Ginger investigated it without barking, we praised her. We talked happy baby talk about the vacuum. I would push it around as if I was vacuuming, but with it off and would praise her when she left it alone.

As she got used to the idea that I liked it when she was friends with the vacuum, I'd turn it on and leave it standing there. I'd correct her if she barked or lunged at it. Ginger's problem was she would position herself in front of the vacuum on purpose, and then bark when I would push it near her. To dogs, objects approaching them head-on are a threat.

So I'd body block her from getting in front of the vacuum. If she got around me, I'd correct her if she barked. I'd do this in really short bursts - 10 seconds. Shut the vacuum off, praise her if she left it alone. 20 seconds. A minute.

It sounds like a lot, but I now have silence from them when I vacuum so it's worth the time. Chat Icon

No advice but my guy hates the vacuum too. All I have to do is touch the it and he runs like the wind (doen't attack it though). When I actually start vacuuming he goes crazy running all around. I don't think they'll ever be friends Chat Icon

No tips here either but you're not alone! My dogs hate the vacuum cleaner, but we don't really use it much anymore since we only have carpet on the stairs. But my pit, Lucy, hates my camera. I mean HATES it with a passion. She is especially vocal when I'm trying to take a picture of her, but even if I'm taking pictures of other stuff, as soon as the camera goes in front of my face, she flips out! SO weird. Irwin doesn't seem to mind at all! Chat Icon

My dog has the opposite reaction! She's like 70 lbs. and although she's sweet she's a mean barking watch dog. But as soon as the vacuum gets near her she's visibly scared and tries to cower away from it. So I keep it as far away from her as possible, but I really do think it's strange. I guess to her it looks and sounds scary!

My dog attacks it only when it's off and I'm pushing it through the house. When it's on he doesn't bother. He's so weird! Chat Icon
