Don't know about the store, but is this going to be at 5 corners?

The store will carry discounted non-name items.

An example would be cans of off brand corn for like $.20.

The ones I have been to also have a bread section and freezer. I like the prices in the produce section as well.

I am excited.....where is it going to be?

I hate it. Chat Icon It's all junk food and bad produce. The one by my house anyway. I've only been there once though, maybe I didn't give it a chance.

I don't live in NY, but all of the Aldi stores in NC have been fabulous! We shop there about once a month to stock up on "staple" type stuff...cereal, clear waters (my DH lives on them), cans of beans and tomatoes for chili, etc. Their produce has always been great here...and they have a weekly special. Last week here, it was heads of cauliflower for 99 cents! Unbeatable!

I can't say enough great things about them! I actually think supermarkets sell a much higher ratio of junk food!

When I shopped there about 15 years ago, it was all off brand stuff at dirt cheap prices. A lot of processed foods. Maybe it has changed since then. I would def. NOT compare it to TJ's though. The stuff may be private label, but that does not mean quality at all.

I agree. There was one next to my college, and I have to say, the store was awful. This was about 10 years ago, so maybe it has changed or maybe it depends on location, but the Aldi's I went to had no fresh produce at the time. It was all processed and generic looking packages/cans at cheap prices. The quality for some items were low, and some were just like the food you would find at a dollar store or something. This location often sold things with an expired date, so I don't think it is so far fetched to say check out the dates. (but that is a given at any store really). However, I just checked out the website and the pictures they have make it look WAY nicer than the location I went to. Maybe since their business is doing well, with time and money they have expanded their stores/the shopping experience there.

It is kind of bizarre - the off labels look just like the real thing but they aren't. I believe this is a big grocery retailer in the UK and is expanding in the US.

For example, they have a fake "General Mills" "Cheerios" but the box looks so similar. I don't know how they get away with ripping off logos like that.

Their produce prices are great - no organic or anything like that.

The one near me had like an entire section of pork products. Again, kind of bizarre.

I had a coupon due to a grand opening and ended up just buying garbage bags, light bulbs, and a few other things like that.

It might be fine but the off brand stuff seemed odd to me. We really don't eat canned food or processed foods either, so for me, it's not worth it to shop there.

I love Trader Joes and I wouldn't compare the 2.

I am not a fan of Aldi--I have been to a few out here in Rhode Island and the produce has always been rotten or old. They have private labels, but i would not consider them even close to Trader Joes. Once in a while I will see a brand name like frozen pizza or something and will pick it up...otherwise, I rather not shop there at all.

There was one in MI when I lived there - the students called it the low budget grocery store. Didn't really like it. Lots of processed foods - but the brands reminded me more of the food you see at say the dollar store.

I'm not sure how they are here - but they had no bags like costco - you had to bring your own or people brought their own boxes.

There is one near me (I am upstate) and I rarely go. There just isn't enough variety. However, they do sometimes have great deals on random kids stuff. My friend bought her kids the step 2 wagon there for $35 and really cute easels.

I do have to say, the chocolate bars are INSANELY good. I'm not sure where they are from (Switzerland, Germany, ??) but they are the best chocolate I have ever tasted.

Re: Aldi's Grocery opening in lake grove what kind of market is it?

We are in CT and the aldi's by us is very good. Great produce for cheap, other staples like milk, baking items, etc. I think it has significantly changed in 10 years. There is processed food of course and we certainly don't do our entire food shopping there, but we budget like $20/wk there and get a ton of stuff.

Their parent company is the same as Trader Joes.

The ones in Mn and NC have been terrific. They have wonderful snacks and chocolate. I bought tons of private label item and stuffed them in my suitcase.

I haven't been to the one in Queens yet. Just bring your own bags bc they charge for bags. Very European!

Love Aldi's! I go to the one upstate everytime we are at FH's parents, never had a problem. I get my salad dressings, snacks, butters, cookies. I wish they had one on SI.

Yes! We pay anywhere from 1.90-2.60 for a gallon of whole milk (not organic)

Aldi's here in Chicago are decent. They have pretty good prices on staple items and produce. I never go there to do all my shopping, but have got there for a few items here and there. They do have some name brands, but not a lot.

The only thing I don't like is that they don't bag your stuff and you have pay for a bag each time. Also you have to put 25 cents in the cart to get it out of the corral, but you get it back if you put it back in the corral.

By the way, for those of you who said that you wouldn't compare Aldi to Trader Joe's...it may surprise you to learn that they are actually the same company Chat Icon Actually, Aldi's frozen meals are VERY comparable to the ones we buy in TJs, and cheaper, too!

I was going to say this too.

Check their website, it has their mission statement.

We shop there about once a month...my usualy go to's are DD's and our snacks. They are almost all private label things, but they taste exactly like the name brand. I've shopped at a few in LI and many times at the one in queens. String cheese, yogurt, milk, eggs, breakfast bars, fruit snacks..all much cheaper than reg grocery stores. They have meat too and I've only tried a few things, but always good. their produce selection isn't huge, but what's there is GOOD and CHEAP.
Frozen foods- waffles, pancakes, fish sticks, chicken nuggets...we have never been disappointed. Canned goods as & sliced bread as well. I FILLED my cart yesterday with all staples and paid $88. You do have to bring your own bags and the setup is a bit strange, but if you take your time and look at the items..there's a lot and you do save money.

Oh- and the chips/pretzels/dips/salsas for parties- can't beat those prices!
