Running while pregnant

Did anyone continue to run while pregnant? If so, did you cut back on speed/mileage? TIA!

Re: Running while pregnant

I did, but I switched pretty early on to run/walk intervals because that's what worked for me. I started running for time instead of distance so by default my mileage was cut back. I made it to 7 months and then had to switch to all walking.

I would definitely talk to your doctor, but it should be fine for you to continue. Just listen to your body as far as speed, mileage etc.

Good luck!

I ran until about 6 months, then just walked, but I had some issues so I had to stop and just walk at that point.

I definitely cut down on speed initially, and mileage after about 3 months. I would just make a playlist for a certain amount of time and whatever ground I could cover in that time was fine. I also switched to run/walk intervals around 4 months.

You can still run if all is ok, you just have to modify it a bit.

I am not pregnant (yet), but I know that if you are a regular runner, it is fine to continue running while pregnant.

I would talk to my dr about exertion, etc and maybe get a heart rate monitor.

I ran until I was about 8 weeks along. After I used an elliptical since my heart rate was going above the recommended limit.

Re: Running while pregnant

I ran a handful of times during the first trimester, but took it much more slowly. I had been running 3-6 miles before getting pregnant. I ran closer to 3-4 miles when pregnant. I haven't run in about a month more because of exhaustion, heartburn, etc. I'm not sure if I'll go back to running, but I'll at least start walking again on the treadmill this weekend. I had friends who jogged until 7-8 months pregnant.

Re: Running while pregnant

I ran throughout the first 6 months of my pregnancy and then the last 3 I walked. I ran a lot before getting pregnant and the doctor said it was completely fine. I ran several races while pregnant even a 10k at 6 months. My doctor okayed everything. He said a heart rate monitor was not need- what I needed to do is a "talk test". If i could talk without being out of breath then I was fine.

I really believe cardio exercise helps with pregnancy and during labor. Even if its just walking. Good Luck!!

Re: Running while pregnant

I ran while pregnant and while I kept my heart rate above 140, I just ran at a comfortable pace for me. As my pregnancy moved along, that pace just got slower until I moved indoors finally to the elliptical machine.

I ran till i was 22 weeks pregnant with twins - i just listened to my body - most days it felt fime to run and helped my morning sickness but if i felt off i slowed down and walked for a little then started running again

i was told if it was single i could run the whole time - just have to listen to your body and your doctor

I ran with all three. Your body will slow you down - it's harder to breath and move in general. I even did "races" up to 34 weeks.

My OB said OK to running 2 weeks PP after my last c/s

Did you cut down on your mileage at all? I don't run a crazy amount of miles, but I usually do one "longer" run per week and I'm not sure if I should keep that up.

bigtime!! I got to the point when 2 miles was too much ~5 months. I would keep doing what you are doing and let your body tell you.

You will notice lung capacity pretty quickly.

Then even though you might not be showing, the belly start to jiggle a little.

Walking breaks are a great way to keep up some of the mileage.
