Cruise options...so pricey with kids
Anyone know how to get cheaper rates. I can't believe I get quoted for each kid at over $1300 each. They are only 4, 4, and 6. It's over $7500 for a week long trip. Just wondering if there are other options. We keep getting pushed to a suite because we are a family of 5. We want to go with our cousins in April out of NY.
Any good websites to search other than the cruise line itself? I remember my BIL adding his girlfriend on two weeks before we set sail and she literally paid a quarter of what we had. Maybe I should leave DH off until the last minute. Ha. Just kidding.

Try vacationstogo.com We just took a cruise and instead of a suite we got adjoining rooms. I'm not sure if it was cheaper, I think it was. But it gave us more privacy and two bathrooms that way.

We are looking at Norwegian out of NY.
Two adjoining rooms might be cheaper. I didn't even think of that. Thank you!

Re: Cruise options...so pricey with kids
That's exactly what we took- NCL Gem out of NY. I know they are limited with adjoining rooms, we only had a porthole window, but it was fine. We were hell bent on having a window of some kind, but in retrospect, I think we would have been fine with interior rooms. If the price is way cheaper, I would just do the interior.

Re: Cruise options...so pricey with kids
We usually get a smaller room (either inside or outside window) and for a family of 4 it is $3,500. It all depends on the cruise though as I always see these great deals but when you go and book the week you want, it is never that good. I personally find that the prices are the same on every site but many sites offer OBC's that others do not. If you have a Costco card, they have the same prices but offer other goodies when booking and with OBC's too.

Re: Cruise options...so pricey with kids
If it's over spring break, I wouldn't count on finding anything cheaper. It seems they jack up the rates when schools are out. In my researching cruises, I found that different travel agencies offer different amounts of on board credit though.

Have you compared the prices with Costco or on the cruise ship site? I ask because I can always get a better deal and I have never found one that was less. Just extras added in.

With that price I would say are you looking at Disney? I think they charge a pretty high rate for children. I priced an 8 day cruise out of NY for an inside and window for 4 2 adults 2 children (3 and 5) and they wanted about $6500. You can go on Celebrity in a family view which is a huge balcony room (non suite) for about 4 for 7 nights. Most other cruise lines it looks like they charge less for the 3rd and 4th person in the cabin. Even their 3 and 4 days often cost as much or more than a weeks vacation on another line or at a land resort. You are paying for the disney name (and the new ships really look nice though).
Check out some of the bulk discount sellers. Cruisecompete, Bestpricecruises etc. If it is disney watch for specials - I have seen in the past where kids travel free (still have to pay port charges, taxes, etc - but not the actual cruise fare).

Re: Cruise options...so pricey with kids
I recommend cruisecompete.com too.
Agents will send you quotes and you just pick the one that offers the best deal and gives you the most OBCs.
I think 7500 is way too high for a Norwegian cruise. Watch for their children sail free specials and you can save a alot.
My bro took advantage of the deal and booked his cruise for 4 for a total of $700. Granted, he got an interior room for a December trip but that's still a steal. He only had to pay for his wife and himself while both kids sail free.
Once he got on the ship, he upgraded his room for a few hundred more...
If you're going to pay that much for a cruise, sail on RCCL or Disney cruiseline instead. You'll get a better experience on either of those cruiselines. I sailed on Norwegian last year and was not impressed at all.

Wow....$700? What type of cruise was that and for how long? The cheapest cruise I was on was $1,000 per person and that was almost 19 years ago-lol.

Re: Cruise options...so pricey with kids
I would look into a Disney cruise. You might be able to work it out with a regular room or adjoining rooms. The rooms are designed for families, so there's more space, etc. You're also getting a lot for the money in terms of all that's included, especially for the kids.

It was the Norwegian Jewel sailing out of NYC for the Bahamas in December, Port Canaveral and Great Stirrup Cay. I was on that cruise too and while it wasn't my favorite destination, for the price you can't beat that.
My bro got the good deal but I ended up paying $2100 total for 2 adults and 1 child under 3. Granted, I got the balcony minisuite, but still I would never pay more than 700/per adult for a week-long cruise and I've taken a few weekly ones on Princess and Celebrity cruiseline. Not all are off-peak trips either.

Oh ok. I didn't care for NCL but that is a good deal.

Thanks everyone. I'm bound by the summer or school schedules since I am a teacher. I think we are just going to save our money and take the Disney cruise eventually.

What type of room were the quoting you for $1300 each?? I have sailed on NCL 6 times and have never paid that much for kidsmost I paid was $699/kid and that was a 12 day mediterranean cruise. We have a cruise next week for break and are paying $299 for the kids in our cabin which has a separate bedroom that we are in, kids will sleep i living room o sleeper sofa. Are you trying to book adjoining cabins? They might be steering you toward the family suite because the price for the first 2 is higher, but usually for the 3-5, its pretty cheap an its a better deal than adjoining cabins as ou get the suite perks that go with it.

Re: Cruise options...so pricey with kids
For a suite it is 1700 each for me and DH and 1099 for each of my three kids. This is over the April break out of NY on NCL. That's what I was quoted on their site and when I called. We sailed years ago with an 18 month old on RC and had an inside room and. Paid $1100 for DS. It was a ten day.
Where are you leaving out of? Flying 5 of us down to Florida is too expensive the week of April break. Plus we want to go with his cousins who are leaving out of NY.

Re: Cruise options...so pricey with kids
An ocean view family room would be $5500 if you're thinking of April 7. Or a porthole ocean view for 2 people is $2200 and for 3 is $3300. So two rooms for the same price as cramming into one.

That only fits four according to the website. We have 5. Might just have to skip it. Who would have thought having three kids would have sent us over the edge for a cruise. Lol

Have you priced out 2 adjoining lower category cabins - i.e 2 adjoining inside or port window ones. That might be cheaper than going for a suite which can be a lot of money.
